Hidden Valley Lake. The 61-acre mountain top lake averages 14 feet in depth and is surrounded by 2.3 miles of forested shoreline. As improbable as it may seem, hiding in a sixty acre lake and a narrow valley at 3,600 feet elevation is nearly accomplished near the crest of Brumley Mountain in Washington County. The beauty of this high country lake and the ruggedness of the surrounding area make Hidden Valley Wildlife Management Area a worthy find.
Hidden Valley is a local segment of the Valley of the Jackson River, a bold Virginia stream that for most of its course follows the strike of the folded Appalachians, then curves east across the ranges to become the James at Clifton Forge. Although scenic in a conventional sense, the Valley is a degraded landscape. Part of the George Washington National Forest, the U S Forest Service, in characteristic mismanagement, has prevented the Valley from reverting to the rich alluvial ecosystem that is so rare on public lands. Instead it has maintained much of it as hay fields, encouraged the invasion of alien species and even allowed its desecration by a commercial bed and breakfast – all land type uses already common on adjacent private lands.
Forests of the Central Appalachians Project. The Central Appalachian forests of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania are some of the most biologically diverse and most threatened ecosystems anywhere. Home to many thousands of species of plants and animals, they represent a vast but dwindling source of medicinal compounds, recreational amenities and precious solitude.
