The US50 - A guide to the fifty states. At the start of the Revolutionary War, Rhode Islanders were among the first colonists to take action against British rule by attacking British vessels. On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island was the first colony to renounce allegiance to Great Britain and declare independence. Although no major battles took place in the state, Rhode Island regiments participated in every major campaign of the war.

Colonial Occupations. The first emigrants to America had occupations concerned primarily with simple, basic survival in the New World. They were, for the most part, skilled laborers, who could make things most of us now only dabble in as hobbies.

Rhode Island. In 1776 Rhode Island became one of the Thirteen Colonies to renounce its allegiance to Great Britain. The site contains Rhode Island Historical Maps for 1703, 1729, and 1862. Providence, was founded in 1636 as a settlement by English clergyman Roger Williams, after he was banished by the Massachusetts Great and General Court. Williams selected the name in gratitude for "God's merciful providence" that the Narragansett have granted him title to the site. Anne Hutchinson was exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1638 and brought more settlers who were attracted to the colony by the promise of religious freedom to establish Pocasset, now Portsmouth. William Coddington and others founded Newport in 1639. In 1643 Samuel Gorton founded Shawomet, now Warwick. The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations also gave protection to Quakers in 1657 and to Jews from Holland in 1658.

Rhode Island Muster Rolls 1746. The war between Spain and Great Britain, which started in 1739, was the forerunner of the French and English War, in which the American colonies were active from 1744 to 1748. The following description of Rhode Island's part in the struggle is taken from Arnold's History of the State, and the Muster Rolls of three of the companies enlisted are here first printed from the manuscript copeis in the archives of the State.
The Profession of Medicine. The practice of medicine as a distinct profession was hardly to be looked for in the chaotic years of society in the new colony of Providence Plantations. But at an early date the legislative authorities imposed such restrictions upon it as they thought necessary for the protection of the people against irresponsible quacks. The general assembly granted occasionally, to such as were considered competent, the privilege to practice medicine in the colony
History of Providence Bar & Bench. The first establishment of any organized court was under the charter of 1644. This was called the general court of trials. It had jurisdiction over the whole colony, as the counties had not then been organized. This court was composed of the president and assistants. They had jurisdiction over all aggravated offenses, and in such matters as should be by the town courts referred to them as too weighty for themselves to determine, and also of all disputes between different towns, or between citizens of different towns and strangers. They had two sessions in each year.
