The US50 - A guide to the fifty states. First explored for France by sieur de la Salle in 1669, the Ohio region became British property after the French and Indian Wars. Ohio was acquired by the U.S. after the Revolutionary War in 1783. In 1788, the first permanent settlement was established at Marietta, capital of the Northwest Territory.
Wildernet - Ohio. This large mid eastern state lies on the southern shore of Lake Erie and immediately west of Pennsylvania. Southern Ohio supports thousands of acres of farmlands. The Ohio River forms the southern border of the state. The Wayne National Forest occupies nearly 200,000 acres of rolling hills and forest in the southeastern area of the state.

Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - and thus influencing, as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. The Refugee Tract. All that part of the City of Columbus which lies east of theScioto River and between Fifth Avenue on the north, and Steel-ton on the south, a distance of four and one-half miles, is onwhat is known in law and history as the "Refugee Tract," which was, as we shall hereafter see, set apart by the government for the benefit of "Refugees from Canada and Nova Scotia."
Ohio's only American Revolutionary War fort. Fort Laurens was built in late November, 1778, on the banks of the Tuscarawas River near what is now Bolivar, Ohio. General McIntosh named the fort in honor of the President of the Continental Congress, Henry Laurens. The wooden stockade was approximately one acre in size. It was a quadrangular-shaped fort with four bastions approximately 240 feet from the top of one angle of a bastion to another. Barracks and storehouse buildings were located inside the walls.
Fallen Timbers Battlefield Archaeological Project. On Aug. 20, 1794, Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne and his Legion of the United States met and defeated the confederated tribes, led by Weyapiersenwah (Blue Jacket) of the Shawnee and Michikinikwa, at the Battle of Fallen Timbers.

The Cuyahoga River was a retreat from the last glaciers ever seen in the United States. It is called an "infant glacial river", because it is young compared to all of the other rivers formed by glaciers. The river was formed about 13,000 years ago, but the Cuyahoga Valley has been there even longer.
Adams County History. Probably the most important earthwork in the West is The Serpent Mound. It is on Brush creek in Franklin township, about six miles north of Peebles Station on the C. & E. Railroad, twenty one miles from West Union, the county seat, thirty one miles from the Ohio River at Manchester, and five miles south of Sinking Springs, in Highland County.

West Virginia Civil War Sites in the Eastern Theatre. West Virginia, it can be said, was a child of war. The Civil War pitted brother against brother and, in Virginia, county against county. Prior to the war, there already existed in Virginia a social difference between the eastern and western regions. These, in turn, led to political feuds. There were other differences: the distance between the two regions, the mountain barriers, the diverse physical settings, the separate commercial alliances and various misunderstandings and jealousies.
