The story of Jack and his magic beans is a well-loved tale. Shown here in traditional style, Jack climbs the beanstalk towards the giants’ castle.

We will bring you the full chart in four equal parts, starting at the center (indicated by the black arrows on the pdf chart) and working in either direction. The list of materials includes everything you will need for the complete height chart. The four charts join together with no overlap rows.

To Work

Use two strands of thread for all cross stitch and French knots and one strand for the back stitch. If you need help see our Stitch Glossary.

To Complete

Press carefully on the wrong side to avoid flattening the stitches.

Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of the embroidery. Lay the backing fabric on a smooth work surface and place the embroidery face down on the backing fabric. Measure in 5 cm from each long edge of the backing fabric and mark with a pencil line. Make sure that the lines are straight and that they do not come too close to the stitching.

Draw a line 4.5 cm down from the last row of stitching at the bottom of the chart.

At the top of the design draw a line 8 cm above the "140 cm" marking.

Machine stitch around the pencil lines, leaving a 30 cm gap in one long edge. Trim fabric to within 1.5 cm of stitching line and snip across corners.

Turn fabric right side out and use a knitting needle or similar to push out the corners. Press on the wrong side. Neatly slip stitch the opening to close.

Tie the ends of the cord together using a reef knot.
Fold the top of the chart through the cord loop to the wrong side. Pin In position. Slip stitch top of chart to the backing fabric along the short end and up each side towards the cord.

Hang the height chart so that the 140cm measurement is at the correct height from the floor.
