Little Rocket

Games | Things to Do | Science

Do this project outside -- it makes a mess, and your rocket is going to fly high!

Note: Use adult supervision when doing this project.

Materials:

Directions:

Take the lid off the film canister and pack the lid tightly with baking soda. Pour about two teaspoons of vinegar into the film container. Gently put the lid on the film container and snap it closed. Turn the container upside-down, put it on the ground, and move out of the way fast! After a few seconds, the "rocket" will shoot up into the air

Why does this happen? You are creating a chemical reaction between the baking soda and the vinegar. These two chemicals react to produce carbon dioxide gas. Pressure builds up until the small container can no longer contain the gas. The gas pushes lid off to release the pressure. The force of the lid popping off pushes the container up into the air.
