Floating Eggs

Games | Things to Do | Science

Not all water is the same! For example, salt water is heavier than plain (or fresh) water. You can prove it with this simple experiment.

Materials:

Directions:

Fill the glasses about 3/4 full with water. In one glass add about 1/4 cup of salt and stir until the salt has dissolved. Crack an egg into each glass, and watch what happens! The egg sinks to the bottom of the plain water, but it floats in the salt water

Why does this happen? The salt makes water heavier than plain water. The egg is then lighter than the salt water and floats on it.

Fun Fact: The Dead Sea has so much salt in its water that everyone who swims there floats!
