Level: Easy

Age: 5 and up

Materials needed:

Directions:

1. Pick a used can with a shape you like. Peel off any labels and wash and dry the can thoroughly. Fill it with water and freeze. (You'll use the ice to keep the can from collapsing.)

2. Decide on a design and either put it on paper and tape it to the can or draw the design on wide masking tape after you've applied it to the can. Pick a simple geometric design; for example, diamonds or hearts.

3. Lightly pound in the nails. Use different sizes to create different-size holes, or use one size for all the holes. Make two holes near the rim of the can on opposite sides for the handle.

4. Cut a length of 16-gauge wire and bend it into an even U-shaped handle. Turn up each end to form a hook. Attach the handle to the lantern and put a votive candle inside.

5. Lanterns can be hung or carried. (Remember to always observe fire precautions with lighted candles.)

A variation you can try is to make some cuts in the metal in addition to the holes. Use a sharp chisel to add some diagonal cuts and push the peaks in.
