The G11 rifle is the result of a joint effort between Heckler & Koch and Dynamit Nobel to produce the world's first service rifle that fires caseless ammunition. The benefits of caseless ammunition include reduced cost, lower weight, elimination of ejection and extraction stoppages, no spent case signature, no consumption of case materials, and smaller cartridge dimensions.

The HK G11 is gas operated with a cyclic rate of fire of 2000 RPM, utilizing a floating interior system where the barrel, magazine and breech recoil within a synthetic housing. 50 round magazines and optical sights complete the package. In 1990, extensive testing showed that of 60,000 rounds fired, estimated ammunition failure rate was about 1/485 rounds, with a minimum cook-off rate of 150 rounds at 60 RPM.
