Architecture no matter what connotation it might have, remains the art and science of creating and manipulating spaces.Political, social, cultural phenomena certainly play a primary rolein the development of architecture, however architecture remains the manipulation of spaces.

the city

A city was given but the students were not   not told where it was. Out of analysis they had to develop a concept with which to develop a footprint, what the building was, and what it could be. The site was located in the center of the city.

the ruin

This ruin was located on the site, it had to be reconstructed through analysis. The ruin was to be found in the city, we were to analyze the site plan and its morphology and register its characteristics and extract its formal elements

3dmodel of city grid

The city grid seemed to be a series of smaller, organic looking street patterns which were then overpowered by a brutal, rigid grid pattern. The smaller streets seemed to have succumed to the great force of technology. The center, where the site was seemed to be a hollow core that needed a landmark, to redefine the city center.

landmark needed

The concept for redefining the center was thought of as "shards", constructing the future with pieces of the past

"shards"

The city grid became pieces that clad the frame of the stucture, This structure is the brutal streets that now overlay the old organic one.The red core is the ruin which is to be housed within the new structure. The art piece above inspired the structure seen below.
