The above map indicates the region which we are concerned with (illustrated by arrows) called The Honduran Mosquitia. Although there are other biospheres within this area, namely "The Tawahka Indigenous Reserve", "The Patuca Biosphere Reserve" and "Anthropological Reserve", I will be exploring the UNESCO designated Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve. The arrows indicate the extent of the region known as La Mosquitia and the Nicaraguan Mosquito Coast, stretching some 500 kilometers along the Caribbean Coast of Central America. An area almost as large as Costa Rica, La Mosquitia is culturally isolated from the rest of Central America, and transportation access is VERY limited due to an absence of roads and its geography of extensive coastal lagoons, mangrove swamps and rivers - prone to seasonal flooding.
