A student of Balamb Garden and trainee for the special force known as SeeD, Squall is a grimly calm and serious fighter rivaled in mystery and skill by Seifer Almasy. He thinks everything has a reason and everyone should take care of themselves. After a chance meeting with the Timber resistance leader Rinoa Heartilly, he becomes fascinated by her carefree nature.
Squall, like Seifer, is master of the Gunblade, a special sword with a trigger like a gun.
