4 Speed Transmission
The 4 speed transmission was the original manual T body transmission, and was availiable for the full run of the chevette from 1976-1987. This transmission is probably the best choice if pure acceleration is your goal. The 4 speed has less rotational mass than the 5 speed manual or the automatic, which creates less countertorque on the engine. The gear ratios of the 4 speed are the same as the first 4 gears of the T5 5 speed transmission.
If you are planning on any heavy duty usage with the 4 speed transmission, the later (1981-87) transmissions are desireable due to the larger and much more durable clutch. The clutch on the 4 speed was changed in 1981 to the larger clutch found on the 5 speed transmission. Pedal effort with the later model's clutch is noticeably reduced, while the grip of the clutch is improved over the smaller diameter clutch.
