RONIN SUMMER : FLASHBACK A Sailor Moon / Yoroiden Samurai Troopers cross-over by Morgan Hudson (dataraven_659@excite.com) Chapter Two : Walking a Mile A lone figure slipped furtively from shadow to shadow, clinging to the walls and ducking quickly under bushes as people snuck by. Carefully, it tried to avoid the prying eyes of Man as the afternoon sun burned its sensitive eyes. Snarling softly, it pulled out a pair of sunglasses. This, it decided, sucked. Where the hell WAS that shaggy headed samurai simpleton, any- THERE! The figure clamped a pair of gloved hands over its mouth to muffle a whoop of delight as it caught sight of a familiar blond man wandering down the street. A thick shock of hair covered his right eye, and he seemed slightly confused, rubbing his head with one hand and continually smoothing his jacket with the other. Pausing, he glanced at his reflection in a store window and shook his head. Seiji Date. With a wide grin, the figure pulled up the collar of its trechcoat and tugged down the brim of its fedora. With a deep, calming breath it stepped out of the alley, racing towards its target and swooping him into its grasp, dragging the kicking and screaming teen into an adjacent alley. "HEY!" The young man yelled as he dropped to the ground and turned to face his assailant, "where do you get off attacking a defenseless gi- guy like that? I ought to knock your block off, you creep!" The figure smiled as it pulled off its hat and combed its fingers through a wild mane of green hair. "I see you haven't changed much, Seiji no Korin. Still no respect for your betters..." The boy's blue eyes widened as he scrambled back on all fours. "YEEK! Naaza! Y-you're the Masho of Poison! What are you doing attacking Seij... er, me? I thought you were working with the Samurai Troopers! By which," he quickly added, "I mean us, of course. B-because I'm, uhm, one of them. One of US." Naaza blinked. "Yeah, whatever. Listen, boy, I have a problem with something. I know this is your area of expertise, so I came to you for help." Looking sheepish, he rubbed the back of his head for a minute. "You see," he stammered, "it's those blasted Storm Senshi you left behind in the Dark Kingdom. Anubis and Kayura are off in the Dynasty planning their wedding, so they left me and Rajura in charge. The thing is... these girls are crazy, and not in the fun, cute way that I am! They never leave me alone! Everywhere I go, I've got girls in fukus jumping at me! They hide in my closet! They're under my bed! I've been glomped more times in the past day than I can even remember! I've tried every single thing I can think of, and they just won't go away!" Minako Aino nodded as she sat down and watched Naaza pace the alley nervously. Why, she wondered, did things like this keep happening to her? First, he started getting those headaches, and then she woke up stuck in Seiji Date's body... now, she had the Masho of Poison coming to her with girl troubles! "I see..." she said, hoping she sounded enough like Seiji would, "and where exactly do I come in?" "Well," Naaza admitted with a slight blush, "they leave Anubis alone because he's got a girlfriend, and I was, uhm, kinda hoping you'd get ME one. Nasuti, if possible, but I'm open to suggestions..." Minako grinned. "No problem, Naaza! When it comes to love, you're looking at an expert!" ********** Seiji Date wanted to die. "Okay," he muttered, as he closed his eyes, "I'm counting to three, and then I'm opening my eyes. If there is even ONE Kami out there who doesn't hate me, please, please, let me be a guy again. One... Two..." Unable to resist, she cracked one eye open and cursed. "Oh, come ON! What does it take with you people?" Sighing in disgust, he stormed back down the street. "Okay," he tried again, as his skirt whipped around his legs in the wind, "there's got to be a reason for this, because there's always a reason when stuff starts screwing me over. All I have to do is find Minako, figure out how to switch back, and no-one needs to find out. EVER." He clutched his pink jacket closer around his body and shivered slightly. "Man, these skirts are drafty... I need to get inside and find some DECENT clothes!" Goal in mind, Seiji began trudging towards his home. After three steps, he stopped. "Oops! My family's still staying at my place!" He nearly bit one of his long, painted fingernails before remembering how angry that would make Minako when she got her body back. "No WAY am I going anywhere near Yayoi like this!" Turning on one heel, he then began walking in a different direction. "I'll go to Ryo's place, I left some spare clothes there... DAMN!" Slapping himself in the forehead, Seiji stopped dead in his tracks. "Except that all my clothes will be way too big, because I'm Minako Aino now. Blast it all..." With a grunt, he turned one last time and began trudging through the packed snow on his way to Minako Aino's house. Surely, he thought, surely, she must own some pants and a nice, baggy sweater, or something... he'd just make do. Suddenly, he stopped again. "Shimata! I forgot about the stupid CAT! I can't go to her house : Artemis would bust me in a second!" Frustrated, he groaned and sat on a nearby bench, resting his head in his hands. After several seconds, he felt tears start to streak down his face. This was so humiliating, he thought, and snuffled as his shoulders started to shake. Here he was, the big mean Samurai Trooper, and all of a sudden, for no good reason, he got stuck as a GIRL! Demons, Masho, yauja, he could handle, but... a GIRL? With a wail, he finally gave in and began weeping into his cupped hands. "I can't go to my house," he sobbed, "I c-can't go to HER house, I can't go to any of my friend's houses, and I'm cold, and I'm tired, and I don't WANT to be a girl!" A gentle hand rested on his shoulder, and he looked up. A strange girl sat next to him and wrapped her arms around him, laying her head on his shoulder. "It's okay, Minako," she whispered, patting his back, "I never knew you were this stressed out. Is it the big exam today? You don't have to go if you don't want to..." Who WAS this? Seiji wondered as the girl hugged him. What exam? A BIG exam, apparently. Slowly, hope began to rise. And Minako would never miss a big test... so maybe, just maybe, she'd go there, even in his body... One way or the other, he realised, it was his duty to make sure Minako passed. "I'm sorry," he said, as he sat back and dabbed at his eye with a handkerchief, "my... boyfriend and I are having... some problems. Really, really BAD problems. I nearly forgot all about the big test!" "Well," his strange new friend said as she grabbed him by the wrist and smiled, "we'd better hurry, if we want to get there on time! Forget about that dumb boy... you need to worry about Swan Lake!" Seiji blinked. Swan WHAT? WHAT Lake? Oh, kamis, NO... ********** "What?" Minako raised an eyebrow, realised it couldn't be seen, and raised the other one instead. "THAT'S why you like Nasuti?" "Yeah," Naaza replied, shrugging as he sat dejectedly on an overturned trash can. "What's wrong with that? It's a perfectly good reason." "Because she's SOFT?" Minako blinked. "That's a perfectly STUPID reason, Naaza! What kind of person likes someone because they're soft?" "Well, she is!" Naaza argued, crossing his arms defensively. "She's soft, and cuddly, and she squeaks when you squeeze her! She wears all those pink fuzzy sweaters, and she's..." He gestured, searching for another word. "SOFT! What's wrong with that? I happen to LIKE soft!" "Naaza, most guys fall in love with girls because they're pretty, or funny, or smart, or even because they smell good. Very few fall in love with a girl because she's soft." Minako replied, relatively certain she was right. Naaza shrugged again. "But, there's TONS of women in the Dynasty that are smart, and funny, and pretty. I've checked! And none of them are soft. They're all cold, and hard, and prickly. There aren't many soft things in my home." He looked slightly embarassed, and rubbed the back of his head again. "And sometimes, when I'm around Nasuti, I kind of feel all soft and mushy too." "Oh..." Minako nodded with understanding. "You like Nasuti because she's NICE!" "No," Naaza answered blankly, "I like her because she's soft. We've already covered this, Seiji. Now, are you going to help, or do I have to kill you just to keep this quiet?" "Doesn't killing me just so a girl won't find out you like her seem a bit drastic?" Minako asked. Naaza shook his head. "Not really, no..." "I'LL HELP! I'LL HELP!" Minako yelped. "You just take me to her, and I'll get you in the door." "Great!" Naaza grinned, and his pointed canines glinted in the shadows of the alley. "What are we waiting for? I'll go get the chains, and you can get the duct tape, and..." Minako groaned and rubbed her forehead. "No, no... I don't know how you ask girls out in the Dynasty, but here in Japan we don't use chains and duct tape!" "How about cattle prods and tranquilizer darts?" "NO!" Naaza sighed. "I," he said, "have much to learn..." ********** Seiji was still in a state of subdued shock as his new friend - Mizuki, her name turned out to be - tried to drag him through the simple wooden door. Fortunately, he had thought enough to dig his nails firmly into the frame of a door across the hall, and thus a bit of a tug-of-war had ensued. "I don't think you understand," he said calmly, "I CAN'T go in there. I'm really very sorry, but I just plain CAN'T." Mizuki glanced over her shoulder. "Minako, what's wrong with you? It's just the girl's change room : we go in there every week!" "Maybe so, but today I can NOT." Seiji countered, and tightened his grip on the door frame. Mizuki tugged, and the frame chose that moment to retire, cracking off in Seiji's hand as he suddenly hurtled through the door and into the changing room. He bounced twice before coming to a stop with his legs flat against a row of lockers and his back on the floor. Lifting his head, he noticed a photo of himself taped to the open door of the locker he was sitting in. "Wow," he admitted in a stunned tone of voice, "Mizuki has good aim." "Well, well. It's about time you got here, Minna-ko!" The voice sent chills up Seiji's spine, and he made a mental note to intimidate its owner as soon as he was a five foot nine, one hundred and thirty-four pound guy again. Being a slightly shorter, slightly lighter girl at the moment, he settled for standing up and dusting himself off. "What's the matter, Minna-ko?" The voice's owner walked over and leaned against Mina's locker, glaring at him as she unbuttoned her shirt. "Are you afraid to face your own defeat? Afraid to face me in..." The girl wrinkled her face in confusion. "What the hell are staring at? Did you drop your lunch money, or something?" Seiji bit his lower lip and continued to stare at the floor. "Yes," he grated, "lost... my money." Please, he added quietly, go away and leave me alone. For your own sake, just go away... "Hmmph! Well, that won't be the last thing you lose today, baby!" The girl laughed shrilly, and Seiji felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. "For today, you face the greatest artist this fair school has ever known, the graceful, the elegant, SACHIKO RYOH!" The brunette bowed, and smirked down at Seiji as he began to very slowly grind his teeth. "And, of course, I'll be sure to remember you when I'M playing the lead in Swan Lake, my dear, slow, dumpy little Minna-ko." With a final, irritating, laugh, Sachiko spun back towards her own locker, and Seiji growled deep in his throat. "Minako?" Mizuki looked around the edge of her own locker door, as the blond girl angrily tore off her jacket and hurled it into the open locker. "Don't mind Sachiko : you know she's just a big bully. Ignore her, like you always do." "That's just it," Seiji seethed. "There's one thing I really hate, Mizuki..." His hands flew down his blouse, yanking it off and throwing it after the jacket as he grabbed the slippers hanging on a hook under his photograph. "And that... is mean, bossy, girls who think they can bully me just because I'm younger than they are!" Sitting on the nearby bench, he scowled and tied the laces of his slippers with surprising proficiency. "She thinks she's so hot, always making my life miserable, and Mom ALWAYS takes her side... well I've had ENOUGH! Nobody does THAT to Minako Aino! Not while I'm around! That little bitch is going DOWN!" ********** Minako sighed as she knocked on the door of Nasuti Yagyu's house. Okay, she figured, I'll just get rid of the big, spooky, lovesick Masho, go pick up Artemis, find Seiji, switch our bodies back, and be home in time for dinner. No fuss, no muss. Touma Hashiba opened the door, and Minako stifled a groan. Things, she suspected, were about to get very fussy and mussy. "Hi, Seiji!" Touma grinned and waved for his friend to enter, but the blond Yoroiden of Korin shook his head. "Er, this won't take too long, Touma. I just need to talk to Nasuti for a second, okay?" Touma shrugged. "Sorry, she's out. Fortunately," he grinned, "she entrusted the care of her home to the Shuu Rei Fuan and Touma Hashiba Housesitting Service!" "Where," Shuu's voice echoed down the hallway, "our motto is : We work for food, so stock the fridge!" Minako sighed as she recalled the Babysitting Service, Bodyguard Service, Dating Service, and Kami knew what else those two had thought up. "Fine, can you tell me where she is? It's important." "Jun needed a lift to visit his new sweetie, so Nasuti said she'd be over at Haruka and Michiru's place for a few hours." "Right! Thanks!" Minako waved, and ran off into the night. "Was that Seiji?" Shuu asked, as he arrived carrying a sandwich that was at least the same size as his head. "Does it matter?" Touma asked, as he closed the door. "We still have twelve liters of chocolate pudding to get out of Nasuti's rug! Grab a sponge and get to work!" ********** "Okay," Minako explained as she got off the bus, followed closely by a certain green haired Masho, "this is Haruka and Michiru's house. They live here with their friend, Setsuna, and their daughter Hotaru. We'll just knock on the door and say we were in the neighbourhood. Michi will invite us in for tea, and then you're on." She glanced over at the young man, who looked like he was trying to convince himself that jumping into a shark tank was a good idea. "Do you remember what you do?" "Er..." Naaza blinked. "I... do not remember." Minako groaned. "You act like we weren't expecting Nasuti to be there! Act surprised!" Nazza wrinkled his brow in confusion. "You want me to kill her? That seems rather... un-Yoroiden of you..." "NO! I don't want you to kill her, Naaza! Where did you get that stupid idea from?" "You told me to act like she surprised me! THAT'S WHAT I DO WHEN I'M SURPRISED!" Naaza sighed and ran his fingers through his hair for about the ten thousandth time. "I don't know... maybe this is a stupid idea. I'll just go back to the Dynasty and suffer. It's kind of fun, after the first few centuries..." "Too late!" Minako chirped merrily, as she knocked on the door. After a few seconds, a tall and elegant girl with long, sea-green hair answered the door. "Yes?" She stared for a moment, before her large, dark blue eyes widened in recognition. "Oh, Seiji! Please, come in!" Minako stifled a chuckle. "Thanks, Michiru. My friend and I were just in the neighbourhood, and we figured we'd drop in and say hello. Isn't that right, Naotoki?" Naaza nodded dumbly as he walked in and handed his hat to Michiru Kaioh. "Yeah... in the neighbourhood. Oh, look! It's Nasuti! What a surprise!" He smiled vapidly and waved. Nasuti Yagyu looked up from her tea and started. "Naaza!" Naaza blinked. "Really? WHERE!?" Quickly, he turned and looked over his shoulder. "I don't see him! Did I miss him? Oh, I just get so flustered when I meet a celebrity!" Minako chuckled and rested one hand on Naaza's shoulder. "Man, you need to cut down on the sugar!" "But it's so full of sugary goodness!" Naaza groaned, and wandered into the living room to take a seat adjacent from Nasuti. "Hi," he said uncomfortably, after several seconds of silence. "Hello," Nasuti responded with a small, polite, smile. Naaza rolled his eyes and clucked his tongue, tapping his fingers together as he thought about something to say. "So... about that whole evil Masho thing..." "You mean where you kept kidnapping me, abducting Jun, tying us up, torturing us, and trying to kill my friends and family?" "Er, yeah... THAT thing." Naaza shrugged. "Uhm... sorry. How'd that work out for you, anyway?" Nasuti smiled and sipped her tea. "Well, uhm, actually it worked out rather well. At the very least, it taught me how to take care of myself in a bad situation. And, of course, when to duck..." Naaza chuckled. "Yeah, I had a bit of trouble learning that lesson, myself. You know, my jaw still clicks from that time Ryo Sanada kicked me in the face..." Minako peeked around the corner of the doorframe, and grinned. Whatever they were talking about, it seemed to be working. Already, she could tell Nasuti was starting to loosen up a little. She was laughing at something Naaza had said, and he smiled as he rolled up his sleeve and showed her a scar on his wrist. She laughed again, and said something and pointed upstairs, where apparently Jun and Hotaru were under the watchful gaze of Haruka. Naaza laughed, and slapped his knee. "I remember that!" He crowed loud enough for Minako to hear, and she smiled. Time to take care of her next brilliant plan... "Hey, Naaza?" She asked as she poked her head into the room, "I, uhm, gotta go pick up Minako's cat at the vet. Are you going to be okay here for a while? Maybe Nasuti can give you a lift home, or something..." "It's a bit far for her to drive, don't you think?" Naaza asked with a smirk. "Although," he added as he looked over at the brunette sitting calmly near him, "if you want to come, you're welcome any time! Rajura and I have really been fixing the Dark Kingdom up real nice, and I'm sure that old cyclops would love a chance to show it off..." Nasuti smiled as she took another sip from her tea. "Oh, I couldn't possibly..." Naaza was being surprisingly nice to her, she thought to herself. Then again, the Masho were supposed to be good now, and she should try not to judge him by the way he used to act. Why, he was barely even scary at all, now! Naaza shrugged. Hey, it had been nearly twenty minutes, and she hadn't screamed for help, or maced him, or anything! Not a bad start, in his book, at least. "Well, anytime you want, I'd be happy to give you a guided tour! We could check out the farms, the towns, the bottomless pit... Well," he quickly correctedhimself, "it's not REALLY bottomless... just deep enough so that the giant octopus can't get out..." "Giant octopus?" Nasuti actually looked curious. "Well, I think he might be a squid, but yeah!" Naaza grinned. "I named him Happy. Sometimes we play catch. I throw stuff down, he eats it... I don't think he's too clear on the finer points of the game, but I'll train him one of these days!" Minako grinned and walked out. Another job well done, she figured, and dusted her hands off on her jacket. Looking up at the sun, she checked her watch. "Uh-oh! I better get Artemis from the vet before that stupid furball throws a hissy fit..." She paused. "Why did I just say that? I LIKE Artemis!" With a shrug, she headed off in search of her cat. ********** Seiji's left eye twitched slightly as he leaned against the mirrored wall with the rest of the class and watched Sachiko Ryou, the "Turbo-bitch", as he had dubbed her, performing her routine. She had pretty good moves, he noted clinically, but he could take her. EASY. He watched as she performed a pirouette, and subdued a snort. She might have good technical form, he noted, but she lacked speed and style. If she were a yauja, he'd have carved her up like a Christmas ham in seconds. The music screeched to a stop, and he discreetly checked the clock on the wall. Sweet kamis, he'd been standing there for over an hour! With a self-conscious tug, he smoothed the silken skirt swirling around his knees. Something tapped on a nearby window, and Seiji glanced over to see a disgustingly familiar white cat watching him. Great, a nice, impartial audience. "Minako? You're next, dear." The teacher said with a gentle smile. "Good luck, Minna-chan..." Sachiko sneered. "Don't need it," he sneered in return, and walked into the center of the room. He closed his eyes, double checked the ribbon holding back his long blond hair, and waited for the music to begin. ********** Minako wandered towards the athletics centre, muttering under her breath. Artemis had run away from the vet's, probably looking for her. With a sigh, she jammed her hands in the pockets of her jacket and shivered. Where the heck would that cat have run off too, if he was looking for her on Thursday afternoon? Ballet class, natch! Sure enough, there was a familiar white tail swinging back and forth as it poked out of the flowers planted near the windowsill. With a chuckle, Minako wandered over and reached into the petunias, fishing out a yowling feline. "HEY! What do you think you're doing, you blond oaf?" "Blond oaf yourself!" Minako responded as she easily flipped the cat into her arms and laughed. "You really ought to be nicer to me, Artemis... you know Minako doesn't like it when we don't get along!" With a smirk, she leaned against the windowframe and peered in with her exposed eye. "So what'cha lookin' at, Arty?" "Wow." Minako felt her grip on the cat slacken as she stared, transfixed, at herself. She was gracefully swaying in time to the faint music that reached Minako's ears, and slowly twirled in place, raising her arms above her head as her skirt billowed around her like a silken cloud. Minako blinked. "I'm GORGEOUS! I mean, I always knew that I was pretty, but..." Artemis blinked and looked up at the blond man. "Wait a minute... Minako? Is that YOU in there?" Minako remained transfixed, nodded slightly as she watched Seiji perform a complicated routine with surprising grace and ease. "Yuh-huh. Kamis, I'm cute... I think I'm in love with me..." Artemis groaned. "Oh, no... Luna and I were afraid this kind of thing might happen. The psychic bond you have with Seiji has been destabilizing, and if we don't do something, these side effects might become..." "Yeah, yeah, shut up." Minako waved Artemis into silence and stumbled over to the door, hauling it open and entering the athletics center. ******** Seiji curtseyed slightly as the rest of the class watched in stunned silence. The music screeched off, and silence descended over the room. After a few minutes, Mizuki began to clap, and the rest of the class joined in. Even Sachiko had to, although halfheartedly. He stifled a nasty grin and stood back up. That'll show her to tell me I can't... He noticed himself standing in the corner and holding a small white cat. Slowly, certain facts began to sink into his brain, facts his anger had somehow kept at bay before. Namely, that he happened to be a young girl wearing a white tutu and dancing ballet. He immediately blushed beet red. His own face smiled at him and waved him over. "Uh... hi." Seiji said uncomfortably, as the rest of the class watched intently. "Say, Mizuki, I don't think you've met my new boyfriend... Seiji Date. Seiji, meet Mizuki." Minako smiled and bowed, kissing Mizuki's hand, and Seiji fought off a sudden rush of jealousy. Mainly, he figured, because he knew that Mina would NEVER let him get away with that if he was him again. Not because he had any interest in being kissed by himself. No, definitely not that... "And you were great, Minako!" Minako said, grinning and hugging Seiji. Seiji squirmed uncomfortably for a second, then wrapped his arms around her and rested his head against her shoulder. "So," she whispered in his ear, "where did you get so good at ballet?" "Let's just say," he answered softly, "that Mom wanted another girl and leave it at that, okay? I'm just glad you're in such good shape : I never could have pulled off that last move in my body." Artemis continued to stare at the two, raising an eyebrow in suspicion. "So... if you two are done walking a mile in each other's shoes, would you like to switch back, now? Before Minako cuts herself on the Korin Ken, and Seiji winds up fighting youma in a skirt, I mean." "Kamis, YES!" Seiji cried exuberantly. "Let's get out of here and get me back where I belong!" Catching himself, he looked sheepishly up at Minako. "Er, not that there's anything wrong with being Minako Aino, I mean..." Minako smirked and nodded wryly. "Or being Seiji Date... and, that reminds me : Naaza owes you a favour. I'll explain later." Artemis looked over at Seiji. "Do you want to stop and change back into Minako's school uniform, Seiji? We can wait outside, if you want." Minako stopped dead in her tracks. "Wait a minute..." "Hey, I had my eyes closed," Seiji responded quickly, "and I kept your hands to myself! Now let's just get this mess sorted out, and the sooner the better!" He glanced over at Minako. "I'm starting to turn me on, and it's freaking me out." Shuddering, he ducked into the change room. Taking advantage of her solitude with Artemis, Minako crouched down and looked her cat right in the eyes. "Artemis," she asked, "what exactly are you going to have to do to switch us back, anyway?" "Well," Artemis explained, "I'm really not sure why you switched in the first place. I assume it's a side-effect of your psychic bond, like the headaches and dreams you've been having. All we need to do is stabilize your link, and you ought to be fine." "And where do we go to that?" Minako asked. "Central Control? The Hikawa Jinja?" "No," Artemis explained solemnly. "You're going to the Moon Kingdom, Mina." To Be Continued...
