Hamilton Fleming marked off another day on his calendar, then he
counted. There were 17 more days until Jake was coming back. And then
three more until the fall session began. For the past ten days he had
poked around the campus irritably, bored out of his mind. He'd tried
to avoid his parents so they wouldn't ask him what was wrong.
A few days ago, he'd gone into town. He'd stopped at the garage to
visit Bella for a bit. Her and her dad looked very worried about the
status of the garage. So Hamilton had helped out while her dad had
gone off to Carson for lawyers.
Moping around the dorms, he thought about all the times with Jake.
Down by the lake, during crew, the boat, their dates, the almost-
shower. And before he knew she was a girl; the roof, their first
kiss, her bike, the drive-in, the bathroom...
The bathroom. He'd walked out, and almost not come back. But now,
thinking back, he was glad he had come around. What he would have
missed, but also what he wouldn't have missed.
He never really had any friends before, too sheltered from New
Rawley. But now he had found some here. Scout Calhoun, Will Krudski,
Bella Banks, and of course Jake, his Jaqueline, Pratt. And then there
were others too, Lena.
I wonder what happened to her, he thought. Maybe I'll go find my
parents. We could hang out together. But, she didn't really seem to
like me. Well, actually, she did go to the Cotollion with me. All of
a sudden, the phone rang, snapping him back to reality.
"Hello?"
"Hamilton? Hey!" the voice at the other end shrieked.
"Jake. Oh god baby, how are you? I've missed you." He could hear her
grin at the other end.
"Oh, I'm good. Thankfully. I almost got killed on the freeway thanks
to crazy truckers. I was gonna call you earlier but my mom came
around, for once, and has been dragging me around NYC."
"Oh."
"Don't sound that way. I'll be back," she paused, "In two weeks."
"Yeah."
"Oh, dammit! My mom is calling again. I'll call you later."
"Bye."
"Bye Hammie." Jake hung up.
Hammie looked down. He felt miserable. Jake had barely wondered about
him.
'Maybe I will go find Lena. She could be some company. And maybe, oh
fuck Fleming. Don't think that way. Jake is your girlfriend. Still...
Well I think I'll go get a Coke (Just had to put it in. Haha. :D),
and go see if Lena is over here.
