My Visit (10 Oct, 2000 17:00)
Chen-san is a very friendly guy and he speaks Mandarin (I can only listen to but I can't speak). He was so happy to see an oversea Iron Chef Fan visiting him (espically Chinese-to-Chinese, maybe).
Chen was busy that day because Dinner hour just started, so we can only have a short chat. But he really gives me a warm welcome. After he went back to the kitchen, I ordered a dumpling dish. (I have to go dinner with my friend later that night)
First, tea was served (both cold & warm). Then a special appetizer dish was server by the Iron Chef.
It has boiled chicken with spicy source, two baby abalone and some kind of egg wrapping with veggie inside. It is really appetizing.
Then Chen-san sak me if I like spicy food, and I said yea. He treated me with his famous Szechuwan dish.
"Ma Poa Tou Fu" - A hot and spicy sauce with ground pork and tou fu. (Note: in his book, this dish is called Chen's Ma Poa Tou Fu) This dish is served with a bowl of rice.
Althought I am a Chinese and I had this dish many times in my life at different place. Chen's dish is so unique. It is unlike many other Chinese Restraints, just hot or spicy, I can actually taste two layer of favoure.
Then a dish of Szechuwan style pork dumplings was served. This dish is spicy dish and with a touch of peanut sauce, it is a perfect combination.
Finally, my favor dessert - Almond Favour Tou Fu (a.k.a. Almond Favour Jello) with cherry and two slice of honey dew, what a nice finishing.
By this time, I am almost late for my next meeting, and I feel so sorry I have to leave Chen's restaurant without saying goodbye and thanks to him.
Chen-san, if you are reading this, from the bottom of my heart, I really want to say "Thanks for everything!".
