DETESTATION - PICTURE DISC 7"
A BIG WHITE PAT ON THE BACK-
DON'T COME TO ME FOR PITY, WITH YOUR PATHETIC WHINING SHIT... AT YOUR TEARS I'LL ONLY LAUGH. IN YOUR FACE I'LL ONLY SPIT... YOUR GUILT IS JUST LIKE SEWAGE, FILTHY OFFAL REEKING ROT - AS SINCERE AS BOLD FACED LIES AND JUST AS DEVOID OF THOUGHT. THERE'S NOTHING I CARE LESS ABOUT THAN YOUR CONTRIVED HUMILITY... TAKE YOUR WHITE MALE GUILT RACKED LIFESTYLE AND STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME! I'M TIRED OF STUPID RICH KIDS TRYING TO FIND VALIDITY IN TOKENISTIC GESTURES OF PATRONIZING SENSITIVITY. IT'S YOUR OBSCESSION WITH OUR DIFFERENCES THAT HIDES OUR COMMON BONDS. CONCENTRATING ON GIVEN STATUS IS WHAT KEEPS THE SYSTEM STRONG.
As well we should. Here's a bit of background concerning the lyrics to the above song. All of Detestation's present line-up (Me[Kelly], Saira, and Brian) come from backgrounds which would be considered working class. We've all had to work at shitty, menial jobs to survive, and have never been able to count on mommy and daddy to buy us out of rough spots. For most of my life, anyway, I've lived well below the official national poverty level. Out of this, we've learned to deal with things ourselves. It's made us self-reliant, resourceful people, and it's given us a lifetime's worth of reasons to be angry at a system which tries to enslave imprison, or kill people who, like us, weren't "lucky" enough to be born into the boss class and given a paved route through life, or "worked" to ruthlessly aquire wealth by shitting on anyone unlucky enough to get in our way.
Our involvement in the punk scene is borne of this anger, and fostered to maturity by a callous, brutal world that recognizes only material wealth as a symbol as worth. This is it for us, our involvement is our life, and our commitment is for the long run. We don't have any choice. We've got no one to turn to, and in some cases our parents have even less than we do. Which is why it's so insulting to see so many "convenience punks" - You know, the idiots, usually male, always white, of "upper class" extraction, who ride along on mommy or daddy's trust fund or other financial support. Through their token 2 or 3 rebellious years of punk or political activity, always the quickest to drop out, these fair-weather radicals are around just long enough to assuage their guilty, white consiences before "growing up" and buying their way into a comfortable middle american life. But, when the prospect of working a shit job or living in a cheap hovel for the rest of their lives rears it's emaciated head, they jump ship... a slap in the face to those of us whom poverty is an irrevokable fact we must face every day.
It's very difficult to make sweeping generalizations about everyone who happens to come from a well-to-do family. There are definitely those who manage to lead a full, productive existence without using their family background as a safety net. There are even those who take their landed wealth and put it to highly productive use. But for every one of these, it seems there are a dozen more whose dedication is so obviously temporary it's like a kick in the teeth to the rest of us. It is to these condescending, patronizing, plastic weekend working class heroes that this song is dedicated. Bitter? Yep. Angry? Forever... Only fools and robots could live happily oblivious in a world like this.
