Programme Officer sought for Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa

The Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa, is recruiting a Programme Officer. The Institute works towards the implementation of African human rights treaties, with a particular emphasis on regional intergovernmental enforcement mechanisms such as the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.

Functions: Under the supervision of the Director of Programmes and the Executive Director, the programme officer will undertake implementation of the Institute's programmes, such as organising and teaching training workshops, conducting litigation before the African regional human rights institutions, and research on human rights issues. The programme officer will also participate in programme development, fund-raising, and reporting.

Qualifications:

· Degree in law from a recognized university

· Experience with human rights work, preferably with NGOs

· Computer literate

· Must have been certified to practice law in own country for minimum of 3 years

· Good writing skills

· Fluency in English or French

· Knowledge of the OAU and the African regional human rights system

The candidate should be ready to work in a highly competitive and multicultural environment.

Compensation: between USD 20,000-25,000 a year (tax free) according to experience. Benefits include health insurance and retirement fund.

Starting date: February 2001
