AT INDIA SEEKS A PROGRAM MANAGER, GARHWAL HIMALAYAS Appropriate Technology India (AT India) is a non-profit organization, established in August 1994. AT India's work is primarily in natural resource management with focus on developing viable enterprises and productivity enhancing technologies for the rural poor. AT India/Garhwal is located in Ukhimath, Rudraprayag district, Garhwal Himalayas.

Our work is aimed at assisting village communities to conserve natural resources through creation of alternative income opportunities based on non-timber forest products. To this end, we have established community owned enterprises producing oak tasar silk and honey and have also facilitated women's savings and credit groups through our linkages with local Van Panchayats and Mahila Mangal Dals. AT India plans to expand its Garhwal region activities to include programs in renewable energy, dairy/fodder development as well as marketing of other local products that are grown or produced in this pollution free, beautiful region known as "Devbhumi".

Summary of Position

The Program Manager will lead a team of over 20 committed professionals and field workers and will be responsible for administration and management of all AT India activities in the Garhwal Hills (including the community owned enterprises). S/he will also be responsible for coordination with other organizations; development of new program activities; donor reporting and fund raising. S/he will also guide the functioning of the businesses to ensure their commercial viability. The Manager is appointed by and responsible to the President of the AT India Board. Essential qualifications include the ability to effectively manage a team of people; skills essential to running a sustainable, business-like organization including fiscal management, monitoring of progress, strategic planning, and implementing personnel policies and systems.

Also desirable are experience in the private/commercial sector; well developed skills in managing complex institutional relations; understanding of small enterprise development, forest issues and environmental conservation activities.

The candidate would have good writing skills; analytical skills; and a demonstrated ability to lead a diverse staff and work as a member of a team. Computer literacy and fluency in English is essential. The ideal candidate would be a dynamic person with good interpersonal and communication skills, willing and able to work in a physically challenging environment to bring about change in rural livelihoods.

Educational qualifications required are a graduate/professional degree in a relevant field. The person should have a minimum of five years work experience in management of economic development activities. An attractive salary will be offered, negotiable, based on experience and relevant skills.
