International Environmental and Social Justice Organization Seeks Dedicated Activist for Policy Director Position

The Bank Information Center (BIC) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization that provides information and strategic support to NGOs and social movements throughout the world on the projects, policies and practices of the World Bank and other Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs). BIC advocates for greater transparency, accountability and citizen participation at the MDBs, and promotes environmental sustainability and social justice in economic development decision-making.
BIC is currently searching for a Policy Director to develop and carrying out BIC’s advocacy efforts to promote environmental and social policy reforms at the MDBs.
The policy agenda is set by BIC staff and Board, in consultation with Advisors and Southern constituents, and is carried out in collaboration with BIC program staff, Washington based and international NGOs. The position is based in Washington, D.C.
Primary Responsibilities:
Work with the Executive Director and program staff to determine policy reform opportunities and set priorities; in particular to determine how to leverage analysis from field-based project monitoring activities into policy advocacy work.
Conduct research and analysis, consult with international NGOs and developing country partners in the development of strategies to achieve reform objectives.
Develop policy advocacy documents including briefing papers, reports, and proposals for reform that can be used to influence decision makers in the MDBs, US government and Congress.
Work with international partners in the G-8 countries to coordinate advocacy approaches to Treasury and Finance Ministries.
Initiate and maintain relationships with Bank and IMF management and staff, officials, and US government officials at Treasury, State, AID, and other relevant agencies; attend policy meetings; facilitate NGO interaction with policy makers to promote advocacy agendas.
Initiate and maintain relationships with members of Congress; work with other US-based NGOs to develop legislative strategies to promote policy reforms.
Form relationships with NGOs working on trade and globalization and develop relevant strategic alliances where these issues intersect with BIC’s work on the MDBs.
Work with Executive Director on developing media communications strategies when appropriate.
Work with BIC website manager to update web-based materials and promote international participation in policy reform efforts.
Potential Areas for Policy Advocacy:
Environmental and social impact assessments for structural adjustment lending at the World Bank
Conversion of World Bank Environmental and Social Policies and Policy compliance
Harmonization of Environmental and Social Policies across the MDBs.
Public Right to Know/ Information Disclosure
MDB/ Trade Intersections
Qualifications:
At least five years experience working in the field of economic development and environmental policy advocacy.
Graduate degree or equivalent experience.
Understanding of multilateral institutions, international finance and trade, globalization, environmental policy, or related fields.
Strong experience working with NGOs and/or grassroots social movements in developing countries.
Capable of working with MDB management, staff and Board members, government officials, and members of Congress.
Excellent policy analysis, persuasive writing and communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently, to develop and implement effective strategies.
Commitment to social justice.
Experience working across cultures and in diverse environments.
Foreign languages, preferably Spanish or French.
