Positions: Poverty and Income Distribution Programme
Institute of Policy Studies
Colombo, Sri Lanka
The
Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka is an autonomous, national institution
for research into economic policy, established by an Act of Parliament in 1988.
It formally came into operation in 1990. It was conceived as an autonomous
research institution, designed to promote policy-oriented economic research and
to help strengthen the country’s capacity for medium-term policy analysis.
Though closely linked to the policy-making establishment, its financial and
administrative independence enables IPS to be an authoritative, independent
voice on Sri Lankan economic policy.
The
mission of the Institute is to contribute to the prosperity of a democratic and
united Sri Lanka, and to the enhancement of the quality of life of its people by
supporting and informing policy-makers through independent, high quality,
research-based analysis of medium and long-term national policy issues.
To be a centre of excellence in medium and long-term economic and social policy analysis.
To
liase closely with national policy-makers in the government, donors, labour, the
private sector, and the research community.
To
keep the public informed by providing an independent and authoritative voice and
point of reference on national policy issues.
To
provide a forum for the discussion, exchange, assessment and synthesis of ideas
amongst policy-makers, the private sector, labour, and academia.
To
strengthen the national capacity for medium and long-term economic policy
analysis by investing in the development of our staff and the institute’s
knowledge base.
To
strengthen the country’s access to the highest quality expertise available
internationally by building and managing linkages with foreign institutions and
scholars concerned with relevant issues.
IPS
works with a committed staff of highly competent researchers. The research staff
are complemented by other support staff who provide the necessary backup for the
efficient functioning of the Institute. The IPS Library operates as a separate
unit under the supervision of a qualified librarian, while central
administrative support is provided by the Administrative Office.
The
senior research staff consists of economists and social scientists with rigorous
research training and senior visiting fellows with extensive involvement and
experience in policy making. They supervise and work with the members of the
junior research staff. The research staff work both individually and in
strategic teams, according to the current research needs and their own areas of
interest and specialisation. When necessary, internal teams collaborate with
external consultants on research projects.
IPS
has an internship programme allowing students of economics to gain experience in
and exposure to policy oriented research.
