EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
NISGUA
The Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) is a 20-year old nationwide grassroots organization for social justice and human rights in Guatemala. Our current campaign focuses on supporting democratic processes in Guatemala and on changing U.S. foreign policy towards a more responsible approach to Guatemala and the region as a whole. NISGUA is active in many cross-issue coalitions and there is lots of room for initiative, influence, and professional development.
We are a small team with excellent interpersonal relations, non- hierarchical decision-making, and diverse senses of humor. We are looking for a dedicated, motivated, and visionary individual to be our fearless leader.
Shape and direct NISGUA's efforts to:
· Support the movement in Guatemala for a democratic, multiethnic and pluricultural sociey;
· Educate and empower U.S. citizens in influencing U.S. policy toward Guatemala;
· Build links between social justice and grassroots organizing initiatives that forge ties of solidarity and understanding between the peoples of both countries.
The Executive Director is responsible for overall coordination of NISGUA's work, involving the oversight of most program and organizational aspects. The Executive Director is expected to work closely with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and network members and affiliates to assure the success of the organization and to create an atmosphere that is inclusive, collaborative and affirming.
Responsibilities include:
· Program development and policy work: Assure development of the program consistent with NISGUA's mission and set policy for NISGUA's program areas, including annual speaker tours, delegations, human rights emergency response, campaigns, and the Guatemala Accompaniment Project. Lead the organization's advocacy efforts, and represent NISGUA in Coalitions to influence U.S. foreign policy.
· Fundraising and fiscal management: Provide budgeting and financial management, and assure that NISGUA fundraising meets budget projections. Monitor finances and assure NISGUA's financial stability in close cooperation with the Board.
· Network development: Assure that NISGUA maintains the structures and resources for adequate consulting with affiliate committees and individual activists on program and campaign development. Oversee grassroots organizing activities and develop strategies to increase NISGUA's base and outreach capacity.
· Staffing: Hire, develop and supervise staff to ensure the effectiveness of organizational operations. Current staff includes two full-time and two part-time employees in our DC-office, as well as 3 full-time employees in out Guatemala office.
Required qualifications:
· B.A. or equivalent experience
· Demonstrated success in NGO leadership including personnel management
· Experience with legislative work and policy development, in particular some knowledge of Congressional education and lobbying
· Understanding of the Latin American solidarity movement. Central America or Guatemala experience strongly preferred
· Hands-on experience with strategic campaign and program development
· Experience of fiscal management and non-profit fundraising techniques
· Proven commitment to human rights and social justice
· Excellent communications and interpersonal relations skills
· Personnel management or volunteer management experience
· Permit to work in the United States
The ideal candidate would also have prior experience doing press work and public relations activities and would be fluent in both Spanish and English.
This position is full-time, and will be located at our Washington D.C. office. NISGUA offers a competitive benefits package and remuneration according to experience.
