RUGMARK UK 

Rugmark UK is seeking a Director to be responsible for the establishment of its operations in the UK. The post will initially be based at the offices of Anti-Slavery International at the address below.

Rugmark UK is a recently registered company whose purpose is to promote the Rugmark concept to the carpet trade and the general public in the UK and to link this to the work of the other Rugmark organisations around the world.

JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE:                                   Director

SALARY:                                Negotiable up to £25,000/a pro rata for 4 day week

RESPONSIBLE TO:            Rugmark UK Board

START DATE:                        As soon as possible (no later than August 2001)

 An exciting opportunity to launch a new national organisation in the field of child labour. Rugmark UK is a registered company, dedicated to eliminating illegal child labour in the carpet industry in south Asia. The candidate will need to be a dynamic self-starter, able to deal at high levels with industry and government. Initial funding has been secured for six months and the Director will be responsible for negotiating further funding. The salary offered is based on Rugmark's current resources, but will be reviewed after six months and may increase according to the candidate's success.

 Aims of Job

 To establish Rugmark UK and to promote the use of the Rugmark label in the UK, working directly with importers and retailers and via consumer awareness campaigns. To liaise with other Rugmark offices around the world through Rugmark International, to achieve worldwide understanding and support for the Rugmark and to ensure its continuity. 

Main Tasks 

• Recruit UK importers of handmade rugs from India, Nepal, and Pakistan to become new licensees. Sign licence contracts. Follow up to collect fees on quarterly basis.
• Recruit UK retailers of rugs to stock Rugmark, and compel their suppliers to become licensed. Keep retailers educated about Rugmark, child labour, etc, and up to date with information about Rugmark.

• Fundraise to support the operations of the office, including salary, promotional materials, travel expenses, etc.
• Maintain, expand, and utilise a network of contacts in human rights, ethical trade, government, and industry.

• Increase public awareness of Rugmark

•  Organise events to expand recognition and understanding of Rugmark.

• To promote the Rugmark concept to the UK media and to handle media enquiries.

• Produce and maintain a supply of marketing materials to distribute to retailers, importers, and the public. Maintain a website to reflect existing and new information about UK retailers and suppliers of Rugmark.

• Perform accounting functions including the invoicing and collection of fees for imported carpets, and the remittance of fees to Rugmark offices in the exporting countries.
• Maintain links with Rugmark International and other Rugmark offices and supporters internationally.

• Secretary to the Board of Rugmark UK

• Produce an annual budget for Rugmark UK and operate within it.

• Progress Rugmark UK’s application to become a charity

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Skills and Requirements: 

• Self starter

• Proven interest and knowledge of human rights or development and ethical trade issues.

• Fundraising or marketing experience

• Ability to work unsupervised and independently and to meet deadlines

• Oral and written communication skills in English.

• Financially literate

• High level of organisation and administration skills.

• Computer skills: MS Office, Internet, email.

• Work permit for the UK

Desirable 

• Knowledge of any or all of the issues of child labour, poverty, ethical trade, hand knotted carpet industry, and South Asia..

• Cultural sensitivity.

• Knowledge of UK retail industry, particularly the carpet sector.

• Previous experience of NGO work.

• Media experience
