Various Vacancies

TeleGeography is a fast-growing research and publishing group that focuses on international telecommunications traffic, Internet connectivity, and network infrastructure. We are known for authoritative data-driven research and innovative graphical representation of transborder communication flows. Our clients in over 100 countries are the world's leading telecom carriers, Internet providers, policymakers, consultancies, investors, and equipment designers.

Our rapid growth is creating new opportunities for talented researchers, designers, and technologists. Immediate openings are posted below. If you are interested in working with TeleGeography but don't see an opening that fits your background, we're still interested in learning about you -- just send an e-mail telling us why you're interested, along with a resume or CV to recruitment@telegeography.com

Work Environment

TeleGeography's work environment is relaxed and collegial. All projects are completed by teams of analysts, and all of our researchers are expected to contribute substantially to the success of each project. We're looking for people who are naturally inquisitive, methodical, motivated, and who like solving meaningful puzzles. Our projects require superior research and analytical skills, unusual creativity, tolerance for ambiguity, attention to minutiae and, occasionally, long hours. The learning curve can be ferociously steep, and may require significant independent study. But we tend to think the final results make it all worthwhile.

There's plenty of room for personal and professional advancement within TeleGeography. And there is significant leeway to convert your intellectual curiosity into your full-time activity. We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a central location near Washington, DC's
Dupont Circle.

TELECOM/INTERNET RESEARCH ANALYST

We are looking for a telecom research analyst to work on international telecommunications traffic and infrastructure research. As an analyst, you will research and write about the state of international telephone traffic, communications satellites, and submarine cables. Applicants should have a substantial academic background and outstanding writing and computer skills, and they should be comfortable assembling research projects which range from spreadsheet wizardry to telephone interviews with industry executives around the world.

Telecom or Internet industry experience is a significant advantage, but not a prerequisite. Newcomers to the telecom industry should, however, be prepared to invest a fair amount of personal effort into quickly learning the necessary telecom fundamentals. Database know-how, electronic publishing skills, and fluency in non-English languages are a plus. Limited travel is required.

INTERNET RESEARCH ENGINEER

We are looking for a talented, motivated, and highly autonomous research engineer to take a leading role in a team developing indicators for the whole Internet. As a member of our research staff, you will define, build, deploy, and maintain network tools to gather and analyze data on international Internet bandwidth deployment, traffic flow, connectivity, and performance.

Deep understanding of IP, TCP, and HTTP routing, diagnostics, and troubleshooting is required; proficiency with UNIX shell scripting and PERL is expected. Prior research experience with passive measurement tools and IP network metrics, management, or modeling is a significant advantage.

Internet industry or campus network management experience is useful, but the ability to step back and identify the "big picture" is essential. Applicants should have the ability to make decisions in the absence of specific directions, the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and the confidence to lead research projects in a multidisciplinary environment.

You should have a very solid academic background. This must include a degree in applied or computational mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, operations research, physics, or related area. An advanced degree in one or more of these areas will help demonstrate your ability to invent the solutions this role demands. But other evidence of creative decision-making is welcomed.

Advanced analytic training in the social sciences (economics, economic geography, media studies, sociology) is looked upon favorably when it supplements technical proficiency. A healthy interest in international issues will stand candidates well; fluency in non-English languages is a plus. Limited travel and collaborative teamwork will be required.

WEB ARCHITECT

We seek an innovative, industrious, and collaborative Web Architect to develop and maintain TeleGeography's database-driven Web applications. You will work closely with colleagues from research and marketing teams to grasp the information which forms the backbone of TeleGeography's research products. With other team members, you will construct sophisticated databases and engineer front-end applications that allow clean, unencumbered access and analysis of that information.

In addition to working experience in a Macintosh environment, you must have a deep understanding of HTML, DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, and database structures at large. Demonstrable familiarity with Web development is absolutely essential.

The Web architect is responsible for the bridge between information and knowledge. As such, you must be much more than a Web monkey. We expect you to take an active interest in understanding TeleGeography's research data and to plot the linkages between discrete datasets. Your strong prioritization skills allow you to cope with multiple demands. For a creative self-starter ready to put serious effort into learning quickly,  this is an unusual opportunity to contribute to how the world understands the networks which underpin global Internet and telephone communication.

SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR

We're looking for a quick-thinking systems administrator to help create a research ecosystem that enables fast decision-making, creative exploration, and collaborative publishing. As a Systems Administrator, you will play a key role in configuring, maintaining, and installing the software and publishing systems behind TeleGeography's heterogeneous and highly-respected research environment.

You have a deep understanding of the Macintosh and UNIX operating systems and the TCP/IP and AppleTalk protocols, and you are excited about what the BSD-based rebuild will mean for putting them together. Your database chops are finely honed, and you are ready, willing, and able to work  collaboratively with research teams building internal FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Access, and MySQL tools that take their work -- and yours -- to the next level.

A self-directed, independent problem-solver, your communication skills are outstanding, and you are ready to train diverse groups of people in complex topics to help them become as autonomous as you are. A grizzled shell scripter, PERL is your friend: you know which tasks require automation and you are able to automate them; you are able to solve problems quickly and completely.

Familiarity with wide-area computer environment concepts is a significant advantage, and so is a degree in computer science or computer engineering. If you can see the possibilities behind a distributed network of computer probes, you can expect substantial headroom to work with our research crew. For a highly motivated Mac-savvy geek, this is an unusual opportunity to help create a vision of how the networked world is put together.

CARTOGRAPHER/DESIGNER

If Abraham Ortellius and Edward R. Tufte are your heroes, this position is for you. We are looking for clever minds (and hands) that can help crystallize TeleGeography data into informative global telecom maps and highly striking graphics.

A background in cartography and/or information graphics is highly prized. Your ability to create data visualizations must go hand-in-hand with your proficiency in Illustrator, PhotoShop, ImageReady, and Quark. Ability to produce outstanding design in both print and electronic media is expected. An MFA or equivalent experience is essential.

TeleGeography's information design and maps act as icons in the global telecom industry. If you want to help the world imagine the geography of networks and navigate the sea of international telecom data, this is where you start.

MARKETING ASSOCIATE

The Marketing Associate will contribue to all of TeleGeography's online and offline marketing activities. These activities include direct mail and e-mail campaigns, channel management, trade shows, and Web site development. The position requires excellent writing and speaking skills, telecom or Internet experience, marketing know-how, and abundant enthusiasm. Graphical talents are preferred. The Marketing Associate will be encouraged to develop her or his own ideas and initiatives and advance within the company.
