Requires : Economic Adviser

DFID India (DFID) is responsible for the British Government's development cooperation programme with India. Our goal is to assist the Government of India to halve the proportion of people in poverty by the year 2015. Our annual budget is over Rs. 650 crores a year.

We work closely with central and state governments, other donor agencies and stakeholders, to help make their poverty elimination programmes more effective. Our work, which includes several substantial development projects, is focused on four states, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal, as well as national programme.

DFID's Economic Advisers are grouped with Enterprise Development Advisers, within one of seven specialist advisory groups in DFIDI. Advisers work in multi-disciplinary teams to pursue policy dialogue with partners and to support DFID's programme management staff in design, management and monitoring of our work.

The Economic Advisor
As Economic Adviser, you will provide economic advice within various multi-disciplinary teams. The principal role is to provide economic advice to a state team on the DFID strategy for that state along with economic advice on the state policies (particularly fiscal policies), and DFID programmes and projects in the state. You will also work on strategies for collaboration with particular multilateral agencies, and particular thematic or sectoral strategies.

Qualification and Experience
You will have a combination of basic and higher university degrees in economics or economic development, and a broad knowledge of practical and theoretical aspects of development work.

You will be experienced in and familiar with concepts of macro economics, micro economics, and development policy. A knowledge of public sector policies, including fiscal analysis, will be a particular advantage. A sound knowledge of poverty issues is essential, as is familiarity with project appraisal methodologies.

You will have at least 5 years of practical experience of project work, and policy analysis. Previous experience in working within a donor-funded environment will be particularly valuable.

You will have excellent communication skills in English language, both written and spoken, and good computer skills.

Terms and Conditions

Annual salary for this post, including allowances, will be set according to qualifications and experience in a band starting at Rs. 9 lakhs. In addition, an annual Leave Travel Allowance, Medical, PF and Gratuity benefits will be available.

The contract will be for 3 years, and would start as soon as the selected candidate is available.
