Department for International Development (DFID)

Requires : Rural Livelihoods Adviser

DFID India (DFID) is responsible for the British Government's development cooperation programme with India. Our goal is to assist the Government of India to halve the proportion of people in poverty by the year 2015. Our annual budget is over Rs. 650 crores a year.

We work closely with central and state governments, other donor agencies and stakeholders, to help make their poverty elimination programmes more effective. Our work, which includes several substantial development projects, is focused on four states, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal.

The main function of DFIDI's Rural Livelihoods Advisory Group (RLAG) is to encourage partners to adopt livelihood perspectives in their poverty reduction programmes. The RLAG is one of seven specialist advisory groups within DFIDI. Advisers work in multi-disciplinary teams to pursue policy dialogue with partners and to support DFID's programme management staff in design, management and monitoring work.

The Rural Livelihoods Advisor
As RL Advisor, you will be expected to contribute to the livelihood debate at international level, and to extend the concepts of sustainable livelihoods (SL). As a member of DFID's Rural Livelihoods Advisory Group, you will assist in developing livelihood strategies for India, and work closely within the team of four other RL Advisers in sharing the work within country. As member of one state team you will take responsibility for the livelihoods programme in that state (each SRL Adviser will have responsibility for a state).

Qualification and Experience
You will have a combination of basic and higher university degrees in natural resources or rural development, and a broad knowledge of social science and participatory approaches to development.

You will have had international exposure, and experience of working in a range of different developing countries. This will be reflected in a broad understanding of India's position in the 'big picture' of development, and how the rural development policies of other countries have affected poverty.

You will have at least 10 years of practical experience of project work, including direct experience of working with a range of stakeholders in rural development. Previous experience in working within a donor-funded rural development environment will also be essential.

You will have excellent communication skills in English language, both written and spoken, and good computer skills.

DFID is an equal opportunities employer; applications in particular from women will be welcomed.
