Executive Director

UNITUS

Unitus seeks a truly visionary and entrepreneurial leader to serve as our Executive Director as we create a world-wide microfinance equity wholesale fund to alleviate poverty for millions of people. We seek an experienced, dynamic, and self-motivated individual to take overall strategic responsibility for the operations of Unitus, ensure adequate capital flows and fiscal health, lead the efforts of a small team of economic development professionals, and communicate our vision with partners, shareholders, board members and the public regularly.

Primary responsibilities in the first year will be launching a pilot microcredit equity wholesale fund for microfinance institutions in Mexico and prepare for its replication in multiple places around the world. This will require leadership in 1) crafting operational strategies, 2) developing an organizational infrastructure through hiring or contracting key staff, and 3) initiating an aggressive financing campaign.

Unitus is a worldwide movement of individuals and organizations involved in the fight to bring an end to poverty and economic suffering in the developing world through the mobilization and economic empowerment of individuals, groups and organizations.

We seek effective and sustainable methods of combating poverty, such as microfinance, cooperative business ventures, and education. We are promoting a model of equity capital support as well as debt financing for microfinance institutions and the microfinance industry in the developing world.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Master's degree in management, finance, economic development, or related work or equivalent work experience.

EXPERIENCE: At least 10 years professional experience in the microfinance industry or in international non-governmental organizations, donor agencies, financial services institutions, or have had high-level corporate positions.

At least 4 of these years must have been in key managerial positions.

Applicants should have experience working with a mix of corporate, foundation, and government funding agencies. Applicants should also have experience with fund-raising.

SKILLS: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Must be able to flourish in an unstructured environment, comfortable meeting with top level executives and government leaders, capable of managing an organization without getting caught up in the minor details, and have a sense of humor. Should have ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations.

LANGUAGE: Fluent English, and Spanish or other fluency desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

Successful applicants should have 1) extensive leadership and strategic planning experience, and 2) professional experience managing the daily operations of an organization. Applicants should have demonstrated success in several of the following: building a new organization, creative fund raising, crafting and maintaining a vibrant public image, event and mission marketing, strategic planning, and budgeting and fiscal accountability.

Applicants should understand the local Utah socio-political culture, have multicultural and international work experience, and must have a burning passion to eliminate global poverty and economic suffering.

Location: Home Office, Orem, Utah, USA

Term: Appointment will be for a fixed term of 2 years, renewable by mutual agreement. The position is likely to be based in Utah, USA with some national and international travel.

To Begin: August / September 2001
