John Grant
1753-1820
John Grant immigrated
to Marblehead, MA about 1769. Family tradition holds that he was born on the
Isle of Jersey, Channel Islands in 1753. However no record can be found of him
before he appears as a private in Thomas Grant's (Col John Glover) 21st regiment
, Massachusetts Militia, enlisting for eight months immediately after the battle
of Lexington. This was the first regiment that appeared at Cambridge in uniform.
In August, 1776 he was commissioned second Lieutenant in Captain Thomas
Melville's company and served until May 8, 1777.
John married Margaret Bisson,
whose family is well documented from the Isle of Jersey. They moved to
Lyndsbourgh or Greenfield, NH where all their children were born. They are borth
buried in Greenfield, NH. ( Information from Grant E.
