Night became a member of the living dead at the age of sixty. He was a magic maker when he was mortal and learned from his uncle (his namesake) and his mother. He learned that he can hear spirits when others can't when his family was killed by a spectral figure. His family knew he was a vampire and helped him to hold onto his mortality. Once his family was killed, though he was unable to hold onto it. He became a vicious and ruthless vampire, that is, until he met Miranda, (which he now knows as Angelique).

He worked in law enforcement for many, many years but retired early due to a case in which an Inspector Ballantine and himself worked on. The Inspector disappeared and Night never found closure. He blames himself for what happened to the Inspector.

He has known the Collins family for a very long time and had tried to rid Barnabas Collins of his curse. When he failed, he promised Joshua Collins he would help future generations of the Collins family. Night was married to Quentin Collins's daughter, Lenore and they had a son, Devon, who bears a strong resemblance to his grandfather Quentin, except for a scar on his face.

Night protects the last of the ancient vampires, whose name is Grimdoc. He keeps Night existing due to his own blood. Night was poisoned in 1840 by the vampire who sired him. Has been slowly dying since then. No cure has been found yet.

Lenore wanted him to love again and Night now has a second love interest, a woman who he met while working on a case. She doesn't know what Night truly is. Night had left Bangor where he lived all of his existence, not telling her where he would be. Night can't bear the fact of going through the same thing as he did with Lenore for he loves Roxanne as much as he his first wife.
