| Letter to Dr. de Waal, Laurent Deveze and
Clive Kellner
22 July 1997 |
Dear Dr. de Waal
Clive Kellner has told me that you had contacted him asking about the dates and themes for my show. I have since we last met been doing extensive research on the site of Klapperkop and am very excited about the show which as yet remains "Untitled."
The exhibition will deal very specifically with the militarisation of Pretoria, but generally with the growth of violence around the world. The works will all be new pieces produced for the show. Some will be site-specific installations while other works will be photographic and some sculptures too. The works will be conceptually bound by their relationship with what I call the "Age of Dissent."
I believe that you will be travelling abroad on the 19 October 1997. Given that the month of October is the Biennial month and that we should fit in with their plans so as to avoid being lost in the crowd the only date they have open is the 11 October. This presents another problem as it is Yom Kippur the Jewish holiday and if we opened on that day it could very easily be misconstrued as being anti-semitic which I would prefer to avoid. There is absolutely no way the show will be ready before then anyhow as I myself will be in Europe and the United States.
However I have uncovered a very interesting piece of information and that is that the Fort Klapperkop was "taken-over" or opened on 18 January 1898. I have decided if it is all the same to you that we shift the opening date to 18 January 1998, exactly one hundred years later. We have waited a century, why not wait another few months.
As Laurent Deveze is overseas for 6 weeks and I have not been able to explain the change of dates with him, but I am sure that he will be sympathetic to the logic.
I hope that this meets with your approval.
Yours Sincerely
Kendell Geers
