Young Doc

On January 8, 1849, Henry Borroughs Holliday and Alice Jane McKay were married, and on August 14, 1851 in Griffin , Georgia, their son John Henry Holliday was born.

On September 16, 1866 John's mother died, he and his mother were very close, this was a terrible blow to John. John's father married Rachel Martin three months later, and the family moved to Valdosta, Georgia.

In the early 1870s John studied Dentistry, and in March of 1872, he received his degree.

During that same time, Doc was diagnosed with Tuberculosis, and in 1873 he went west.

Doc occasionally practiced dentistry, but more often engaged in gambling. He gained a reputation as being a beady-eyed gunslinger.

Doc met Kate "Big nose" Elder ( a local Prostitute), while he was dealing cards at the local saloon. Kate had a hot temper, and she liked her firewater.

Doc and Wyatt Earp met in Dodge City, Kansas. Their friendship would be a strong bond and would last for the rest of their lives.

Doc wandered for a while, and ended up back in Dodge City, Wyatt had already left Dodge, and headed for Tombstone. There was no reason for Doc to remain in Dodge, so he took off after his friend Wyatt.

In Tombstone, Doc took part in the legendary O.K. Corral Gunfight, with the Clanton's and McLaury's .

As Tuberculosis and Alcoholism continually eroded his health, Holliday went to Glenwood Springs seeking help. On November 8, 1887, he awoke, drank a shot of whiskey, said, " this is funny", and died. He was thirty five years of age.

Holliday had a reputation as a gunfighter, he probably put more rustlers and cowboys under the sod than any other man in the west. He had been the terror of the lawless element of Arizona, and with the Earps was the only man brave enough to face the bloodthirsty crowd which has made the name Arizona a stench in the nostrils of decent men.
