The Jobes and
"The church"
From Groves to Pineland to Nacogdoches

Acts 2:46-47
46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

On April 14, 1959 there was a division in what was then known as The Groves church of Christ. On Sunday April 18, 1959 approximately 75 people who would eventually be known as the West Groves church of Christ began meeting in the Lions Club House in Groves Texas. We immediately began making plans for a meeting house. Property was purchased at 5510 Hogaboon Road, a loan was procured and we began construction with the men and women of the church doing the work. On Sunday November 29, 1959 we met in the new building for the first time. Although we sat in folding chairs on the bare concrete floors we were in our own meeting house and able to be thankful for what we had. From that day forward The West Groves church has met at that same location in the same meeting house although several additions and improvements have been added. We consider ourselves blessed to have been a part of the church there and to have so many wonderful friends who still worship there. As we visit there from time to time and look around many fond memories are recalled on one hand and sorrow on the other. Due to the fact that many have passed away and others like us have retired and moved away, very few of that original group remain. On our last visit if my memory is correct twelve people are still there who were in attendance that November day in 1959. They are: Craig Fontenot, Meb and Elois Wilson, Gail (Wilson) Cross, Barbara (Jobe) Phillips, Floyd and Jerry Roberts, Beverly (Roberts) Edwards, Billy and Rose (Lunceford) Patterson and Angus and Sandra Lunceford.

As is usually the case in any good church other good people come along to replace the one who leave and certainly this is no exception. The West Groves church continues to be an upright and faithful work for the cause of Christ in Groves and we can only say, we are proud to have been a part of it.

Several years ago there was a preacher who printed a religious  magazine called "The Examiner". This magazine was filled with doctrinal error concerning the church and it's organization but there was one of his quotes that rang out the truth even though the context in which he used it was filled with false teaching. That quotation was; "When you think church, think people!" Certainly this is a bible truth.  Over the past 47 years the church has been a most important part of our life and this is one of several pages devoted to the fond memories of our association with the church of Christ (People) in Groves Texas (35 years). Pineland Texas (10 years), and Nacogdoches Texas (2 years). I will also insert some of my favorite bible quotations from time to time. { Perhaps a little humor thrown in}!

Those remaining from the original group in 1959
Back row: Rose (Lunceford) and Billy Patterson, Sandra and Angus Lunceford, Barbara (Jobe) Phillips. 2nd row: Gail (Wilson) Cross, Meb and Elois Wilson, Jerry and Floyd Roberts. Sitting: Craig Fontenot, Beverly (Roberts ) Edwards. All pictured here are now members of the West Groves church, of course some were just children then. Floyd Roberts was the oldest and Craig Fontenot the youngest.

Jack and June Thompson

the West Groves Congergation
