From discusstions held on Star Wars mailing lists and newsgroups, I'ce come to the conclustion that everyone seems to have 1 SW author they really don't like. And guess, who I've decided I don't like all that much? :) `I, Jedi' is the first book I've read which was written by Michael A. Strackpole, and I found it so diffcuilt to get into I almost gave up.
There are major problems with this book, the first beening that it was written in a month - he admits to this in the acknowledgments. And, I think, it really shows. But, I have come to the conclustion that Lucas has decided to have as much mercandising shoved out as quickly as they could - bugger the quality.
Up to now, I'd always assumed that the Star Wars books were of a reasoble quailty at least. They mighten be brillant, but at least they tended to well written and never rushed out at a 100 miles an hour, like the Star Trek books.
Admittly, I'm not even half way through `I, Jedi', but I had so much trouble getting into the story it's taken me a couple of weeks just to get 1/3 of the way into it. The first section is odd, it waffles around and doesn't have much action in it at all. Seriously, the book seems to be all about this man training to be a jedi with Luke, whose wife has been kidnapped. And what does he do?? He stays with Luke worring far too much about not being able to move things with his mind and not giving a shit that his beloved wife has vansihed!!
Also the part I'm reading now, is essentially just Kevin J. Anderson's Jedi Acadmey series rewritten from Strackpole's characters point of view. So, it's all of Anderson's plot and characters and essentially nothing about the plot behind Strackpole's story. And so far, this part of his book is the most well written in the whole book!
For the time, this is all of thr review I'll write for this book. Once, I have finished reading it, I proberly will update this page - if I think it's worth doing :)
