Angel Island Zone

Angel Island is the coastline area of the Floating Island, a beautiful, relaxed, tropical beach area. It has minimal technology, but there are still the occasional lever or switch and there is a button that will make all the water drain out! (WHERE it drains to I don't know--Hydrocity, I would imagine..) It has numerous small pools and also at one point intersects the HUGE lake that Hydrocity is built beneath. A wooden bridge spans the lake at its smallest point, giving access to the DEEPER jungles of Floating Island--the Mushroom Hills. (The wooden bridges LOOK simple, but they are another example of the echidnas' masterworks. They are simple wood, with a preservation spell, powered by the Master Emerald, woven into them, to keep them from rotting over several centuries--even though they are constantly being exposed to all the weather and are in a very damp, humid climate!) Basically, the Mushroom Hills are what happens if you let the tropical plants of Angel Island grow really wild in good soil, instead of in sand and dry-ish grass like there is on the shore. (I imagine that this was already a beach area on the ground BEFORE it was lifted into the sky.) Oh, and by the way, NONE of the above is actually canon, except for the part about Hydrocity being near Angel Island and the "minimal technology"--those bits are true, you can see them for yourself simply by playing Sonic 3! (Angel Island ends by your falling into Hydrocity when Knuckles dumps you in (laughing!) or jumping in if you're playing AS Knuckles, then from there a flume of water takes you to Marble Gardens, so the areas MUST be near each other. Mushroom Hills' location in relation to all of this, however, is completely up for grabs; I offer my own explanation only 'cos it's what I have.)
Why is it called "Angel Island" when it's definitely part of Floating Island? This has bothered many gamers but the simplest explanation is that "Angel Island" was the name of the ENTIRE Floating Island in the Japanese version of the game, which came first, and when they re-did the names for the American version they were out of time so they just re-used the name "Angel Island" for this area.
Anyway, it's a gorgeous tropical paradise (and in the games it even has Carribean-sounding music with steel drums and everything playing in the background!) and marks Knuckles' first appearance.

469 curious Floating Islanders have come by to enjoy the balmy breezes and the luscious tropical fruits of the Angel Island Zone since June 19, 1999. Of course, they were all stung to death by giant spiders or dumped off the bridges into the lake beneath, but hey...
