Espio the Chameleon

Espio is another "dark good guy", and he USED to be my very favourite Chaotix member (just like with all the other fans!) until just recently, when Charmy somehow, and I don't know HOW, edged him out of first place. Like Knuckles, Espio is a "lost soul"--another orphan, another person who has been cut off from everything familiar. Although as far as I know nothing has happened to the Chameleon-people, and there ARE others of them around, Espio seems to be an exile--whether it's self-imposed or was forced on him we do not know. At any rate he's a loner with a mysterious past that he will NOT talk about. And unlike Knuckles, he is not a direct-confrontation kinda guy--he goes in more for sneaking, spying, and slithering.
He has cool special abilities, too--he can turn himself the same colour as the background, even if it has patterns!--thereby rendering himself "invisible", he can climb up walls and even ceilings using the sticky pads on his hands and feet, do something called a "whirlwind dash" that frankly reminds more than a bit of Taz the Tasmanian Devil, and he can use his long, sticky tongue as a weapon! (That's FOUR special abilities, count them, FOUR. This is not a guy you want to mess with...)
I don't know what the "canon" version is of when each Chaotix member met Knuckles and each other, or even if there IS such an official story, but in my version, Espio is the Chaotix member that Knuckles has known the longest, by quite a bit. They have been best friends even though they were both hatchlings (yes, Knuckles is a mammal but he hatched! If you don't know what an echidna is, now would be a nice time to look them up--go ahead! We'll wait. Who says video games can't be a learning experience?) and were always so close that Espio was by and large thought of by others as Knuckles' adopted brother, though his parents never actually went THAT far. Espio was an orphan even then, and probably needed the company. It is unknown where he got his name--did he just pick it once he was old enough to understand what it meant, or did Knuckles' parents have a really EVIL sense of humour, or what? No-one knows...and that's just it. No-one knows just about EVERYTHING about Espio!
Oh, and from the comic books--Espio has a rather interesting "friendly nemesis" relationship with Charmy--they can't STAND each other, yet they are best friends. Kinda like Odo and Quark from DS9 or something. And he's also evidently claustrophobic.

curious Floating Islanders have stopped by to see Espio since June 19, 1999...but they couldn't. SEE him, that is. Literally. Being able to turn yourself invisible has advantages when being stalked by gaping idiot tourists!
