Vector the Crocodile
First introduced in the panned-but-interesting (in my opinion) game "Knuckles Chaotix" for the 32-X, Vector the Crocodile is of course a member of Knuckles' "gang", the Chaotix, and also a helper-Guardian of the Master Emerald. He is one of the two Chaotix members who was born and raised on the Floating Island; specifically, in the swamps of the Mushroom Hills and the gigantic lakes of Hydrocity. Much of the machinery of that area was built by a minor colony of crocodiles whom the echidnas teleported up to help them out many centuries ago; since then most of the crocodile families moved away, but not all of them. The few that are left, and especially Vector, who makes Hydrocity his home, continue to take care of it and keep the machinery running. They're NOT so good at protecting the unwary tourist--nor do they particularly WANT to, so it's up to intruders to figure out their own way to survive down there.
Vector seems to be a basically happy-go-lucky guy--he's always got his waterproof Walkman on, (and no matter HOW loud he plays it, he seems to be able to understand what you're saying to him just fine; it's unknown whether he reads lips or if he's got some weird power or what), going full-blast, he is always hanging around the food courts and munching down on every single last snack he can find yet never gets fat (hey, a body THAT large NEEDS a lot of fuel! He IS the tallest main character, after all...), and he talks in a sort of "gangsta-rap" slang kinda way (or as Dan Drazen hilariously refers to it, "Homie the Croc")--but he's NOT so happy. He is, like practically all the members of the Chaotix, running away from or supressing a sad, dark past--his parents were both crushed by a falling marble pillar when The Disaster struck the Floating Island and caused Knuckles' people to disappear--when he was a young hatchling, and Vector has been rather moody ever since. He's one of those people who NEEDS some time alone every day the way other people need oxygen or water; and if you bug him at these times, he'll rip your head off--thank the gods not literally! (those TEETH! Yikes!) Despite his ferocious appearance, however, he's really probably the gentlest member of the Chaotix--heck, the gentlest resident of Floating Island, period--and will always help out those smaller and weaker than him. One could even say, in fact, that he acts super-gentle BECAUSE of his ferocious, large, scary appearance--after all, most crocodiles stay in their swamp-villages and don't associate much with most other Mobians--maybe he's afraid that if he doesn't act like a model citizen at all times the others will turn on him. That's not true, but he doesn't KNOW that...
The above was ALL my own interpretation, except for the Walkman, food-courts, and "gangsta-slang" parts. In the comic books, he's got a rather suspicious (bordering on paranoid) streak and he HATES Julie-Su Echidna, one of the Chaotix' new recruits, and does not trust her any farther than he could throw the Island. (He could probably throw HER pretty far, which is why I changed the expression a bit there...) and he EXTREMELY talks in the "gangsta-slang" way. And in yet another version, NetRaptor's fanfics, he seems to be calm, with it, technical-minded, and very very intelligent---which just goes to show that if you don't give fans much official stuff on a character, we'll be MORE than happy to make up our own!
In game terms, his abilities include a weird variation on a spin-dash in which he rolls up into a RING instead of a ball, and it's slower but has a longer range, he can climb walls "almost as fast as Knuckles" (in other words, dang slow) and he can somehow use his Walkman as a weapon of some kind...how I don't know...Oh, and he's a very good swimmer, obviously.

curious tourists have stopped by to talk to Vector since June 17, 1999. Of course, they had a hard time breathing underwater in Hydrocity without a Water Shield, but hey...
