The Carnival Night Zone

The Carnival Night Zone is probably the strangest of all the Zones on the Floating Island because it just...doesn't...FIT. Everything else is either overgrown jungle, mysterious ruins, left-behind technology, or rugged, dangerous nature--but the Carnival Night Zone is, quite simply, a high-tech, modernistic amusement park!
Now, if you look at this Zone from real-life perspective, it's easy to see why it's there--practically every Sonic game has a "fun-time level", and so the designers stuck one in whether it was supposed to be there or not. However, it's from a story perspective that I have a problem with the Carnival Night Zone. EVERYTHING ELSE on the Island can be made to fit together into a coherent storyline if you really think about it...however, the carnival just doesn't make any SENSE. Oh, sure, you could say that the echidnas wanted to have fun, but then how come it isn't in ruins like everything else? And what keeps it running? Electricity provided by the Master Emerald, perhaps?
Another theory I have is that it is somehow connected to "Carnival Island" (or the Happyland Amusement Park, for those of you comic book fans) from Knuckles' Chaotix--perhaps, a proto-version of that larger theme park. In that case, that would make it a NEW area, not old and broken down, which would explain the ruins bit, but not why Knuckles would be building a Carnival in the middle of a crisis in the first place...
Enough of that--what of the Zone itself? Well, it's colourful, loud, clashing, long, frustrating, and very dangerous. This is a "fun" house where you're as likely to be thrown onto a bed of spikes or crushed as you are to eat cotton candy and enjoy yourself. (The finished version, Carnival Island, if they ARE the same place, that is, is much safer...) The music is old-fashioned circus stuff, very cheesy, and the whole thing is gaudy and strange. Everything in this Zone can move you in some odd way--spinning, bouncing, throwing, crushing, swimming...you name it. The most annoying thing in it, if you ask most players, is those circus-barrels that you have to bounce up and down on (shown in the above picture). And then there's the stuff Knuckles does to you in this Zone, if you're playing as Sonic and/or Tails...ay yi yi...
In short, the Carnival Night Zone, despite its title, is not as much fun as you might think. Try to hurry through and get to the IceCap Zone, and do your best not to get killed.

559 tourists have been stupid enough to visit the Carnival Night Zone since January 11, 2000. Of course, they all ended up getting severely nauseous on those spinning disk things, but hey...
