Amy Rose Hedgehog

Amy Rose is about the most hard-working "unknown" character ever--she's appeared in MANY Sonic games for many different systems. In her first appearance, "Sonic CD", she was not a playable character, just the person that Sonic had to rescue whether he liked to or not. But since his adventure was going to take place on "The Little Planet"--a tiny world where time does not flow as it does here--and she is the only person known who can predict the Little Planet's fate as well as when it will next appear, he needed her abilities. Yes, Amy Rose is a bit psychic--a child prodigy. At age 8 she could read Tarot Cards and actually get useful information out of them. In all of her games prior to Sonic Adventure, she was 8-10 years old and had this extreme "little girl CUTE!" look to her, with huge eyes, a puffy green dress, bows on her shoes, etc. Now for the new game, "Sonic Adventure", she has been upgraded to about 14 years old and has a more mature look, with a simple red dress, sleeker, more "human" hairstyle, and funky boots instead of cute little foofy shoes. In all of her later games she IS a playable character, and in Sonic Adventure she has her own storyline with her own quest, different from the others. (Actually EVERYONE has their own quests in that game but hey...)
She also is known for having a major crush on Sonic, whom she also hero-worships just a bit. She obviously is too young--at EITHER of her two established ages--to actually be his girlfriend, but she's willing to try, and keeps following him everywhere. It's just his glamour and fame that attracts her; once she gets older or her attention span snaps she'll realise he's not the one for her. Many of the fans who DO like her also like Tails as their VERY favourite character (if you like one of the "cute little kids" best, I suppose you'd like the other, eh?) and say that THEY should get together, once they're old enough. I say, hey, why not, they'd make an adorable couple--go for it! In 6 years or so...
Amy Rose is a bit of a...controversial character. The Sonic universe fans are divided into two camps--those that like her, and those that hate her guts. The thing is, the fans see that in the "Sonic-universe" as a WHOLE, there are TWO women after our dear blue blur's affections--Amy, and Princess Sally. And because of that, they see the two characters as getting into this huge cat-fight and hating each other--and fans being what they are, fanATICS, they often get into cat-fights themselves, on-line--Amy fans vs. Sally fans.
But that's a bit ridiculous as the two characters ARE FROM DIFFERENT REALITIES. The fact of the matter is, Amy is a canon character, she has actually been in the GAMES, whereas Sally is just a conjectured character from the cartoons and then in the comic books, and has NEVER been in a game. Sure, Amy is in the Archie comic books, but only in a very small role, and rarely runs into Sally there. Fleetaway is a different matter--in THOSE comics, she's older, more mature, and very tough and brave! More like a rebellious punker teenage hedgehog in a T-shirt, rather than frilly little girl in a dress. And even though she still retains her crush on Sonic, her more agressive, confident personality leads you to believe that maybe she actually CAN get him...(and from what I've heard, the Fleetaway comics seem to sort of hint she already HAS...) Basically, she's got her Sonic Adventure (END) personality but with her old Sonic CD look.
This doesn't stop the fans from arguing about her vs. Sally, though. Amy Rose's supporters say that, despite her young age, SHE is Sonic's true "leading lady" and besides she showed up earlier! Whereas Sally's supporters say that Sally, being old enough for him, and much tougher and more assertive of a character than Amy, not only SHOULD have him, but can and will wipe the floor with poor Amy! (I've seen fan-drawn cartoons of Sally KILLING Amy, in fact.)
It is in fact just THAT, that nasty attitude that I've outlined above, that makes me LIKE Amy Rose whereas normally I might not have. (I would have liked her just a bit at first because she was the first playable female character in any Sonic game, ever, but on the other hand, if I had watched the cartoon, I'm sure the tough, strong, brave Princess Sally would have appealed to my feminist nature MORE.) I mean, sure, she's an almost-useless cute little girl, she's a bit annoying, she's pretty wimpy, not very strong or anything, and her only battle ability is her magical hammer. But she's not really a BAD character, she hasn't DONE anything, and she does not deserve to be treated like THAT! Amy Rose fans seem to be fewer and farther between than Princess Sally supporters, so the end result is that if you go onto the 'net and read fan-fiction and message boards pertaining to the Sonic universe, you're likely to find a LOT of hostility directed towards Amy.
Remember what I said earlier about how I have a tendency to stick up for the character that everyone else picks on? Yep.
So in my fanfic, she's NOT a useless wimp--instead, she's intelligent, competent, and useful. So if you don't like that, tough! Go elsewhere! I believe in sticking up for the one that everyone else steps on--after all, in real life, that person has very often been me.
