Planet Mobius
(We regret to tell you that at this moment, no picture of the entire planet itself is available)
Mobius is the name of the planet where most of the characters from the Sonic games were born and raised on, and live on. (With Knuckles and the Chaotix, who were born on Floating Island, being the exception. Except for Charmy, who was hatched on Mobius but blown to the Island in a storm one day. Or the other version, which says he "flew there one day in search of new flowers" but was ACTUALLY trying to run away from his responsibilties as a Prince! Not like this is a confusing universe or anything, no...)
It's a huge, strange, weird planet. The animals there
are intelligent--pretty much all the species, from
mammals right on down to insects. One of their main
civilisation points is called "Knothole Village", in
the cartoons. It is in "The Great Forest" and is built to blend in with the trees, and is not visible from the air. Although Mobians do have technology they seem to
like to live in touch with nature as much as possible. It seems, also, that somehow Mobians of different
species can interbreed! (How I don't know. But there
is at least one established half-and-half character...Princess Sally is supposed to be half-squirrel and half-chipmunk. But those two species are already VERY close to each other. Whether this would work with, say, a dragonfly and a cat, remains to be seen...) Humans live on Mobius, too, but they are not as plentiful as they are on Earth, and the Mobians avoid them. I'm not sure if the Humans EVOLVED on Mobius or if they came from Earth, or some version of Earth anyway, and invaded the planet, but at any rate, the animal-people of Mobius (hereby referred to as "Mobians") call the Humans the "Overlanders" and try to avoid them whenever possible. The Humans/Overlanders live in cities of metal and pollution, etc, like they do here. In the cartoon, the main city is called "Robotropolis", named after Robotnik, who took it over, and populated almost entirely by his evil robotic slaves. According to the cartoon's story line, the city was originally called MOBOtropolis (Mobo as in Mobius, I'm guessing) and was a great city of the Mobians--then Robotnik took over and roboticised almost everyone except for a few, who were hidden and raised in secret and most of whom now belong to an organisation called the Freedom Fighters who's goal is to take back the city from Robotnik and reclaim the throne for King Acorn and Queen Alicia, OR if they're dead by then, Princess Sally would become the new ruler. In the LATER parts of the comic book storyline, Robotnik was defeated, then ROBO-Robotnik (or "Eggman") came in and got the re-re-named Mobotropolis BACK, called it Robotropolis AGAIN, and re-enslaved all the roboticised Mobians even worse than before--there was almost no WAY they could undo their free-will-destroying programming now. As you can see, this gets rather confusing after a while...
Although there are a few human characters in the cartoon and comic books and the MAIN villian, Dr. Robotnik, is...sorta Human...most of the characters you will meet will be intelligent, evolved animals of some kind.
Mobius seems to have both magic AND technology in
abundance. How do these things work together? Well,
often, they don't, but sometimes there is a solution,
as when the technolgy is powered by the magic! There
are these strange jewels hidden around the planet
called Chaos Emeralds that have strong but hard-to-control powers. If you get seven Chaos Emeralds together of different colours you will be able to transform into a more powerful version of yourself, IF you also have 50 Power Rings.
Places on Mobius include the Emerald/Green Hill Zone,
where Sonic makes his current home, the Marble Zone,
the Labyrinth Zone, the Spring Yard Zone, the Casino Night Zone, the Chemical Plant Zone (presumably this would be part of one of the Human cities), the Oil Ocean, Metropolis (same there), the Green Grove Zone, Volcano Valley, and much more. I will attempt to write up descriptions of each of these places in the Mobian Zones section eventually, but it will take some time and be rather incomplete, as I have not played all of these games and some of the higher levels I have not seen because I'm a pretty lousy player!
Some more random information about Mobius--it has a very strange moon-let called "The Little Planet" that appears over the surface of Never Lake only once a year, and only Amy Rose Hedgehog can predict when it will next appear, and its fate, through her tarot-card reading skill. (She has some strange connection to the Little Planet and some fans speculate that she might be originally FROM there--I've even seen one site that had her being the PRINCESS of the Little Planet! But that's all just conjecture for fun---NOT canon.) I don't know much about it, except that it houses the Time Stones, which mess up time itself somehow and might also be related to the Chaos Emeralds.
Another odd Mobian place is Flicky Island, inhabited by interdimensional tropical birds and with a climate so rich, Chaos Emeralds GROW right out of the ground! Flicky Island, like almost any other place in the Sonic universe, has all the traditional types of Zones packed into one small place--a tropical/grasslands Zone (Green Grove), some ancient relics (Rusty Ruins), a fun-time place, (Spring Stadium), an Ice Zone (Diamond Dust), a lava Zone (Volcano Valley), and a Metallic Fortress of Doom (Gene Gadget AND Panic Puppet). It's featured in the game 3D Blast, which I got to play a demo of before it was out in the stores. (Wish it had been more successful...)
South Island, where the action in several of the Game Gear games takes place, is also another noteworthy area. It contains such strange things as the Crystal Egg and the Azure Planet, to name a few...But I have never actually PLAYED a Game Gear Sonic game in my life, so I can't describe it very well.
The most famous strange Island in the Sonic universe is, of course, THE FLOATING ISLAND! Go to its own page to read about it (from the front page of the site.)
And then there are the Zones which nobody is quite sure WHERE they happen--such as Eggmanland from "Planet Freedom" in the Sonic Anime, (which also has "South Island"...HMMMN...) or even more controversial is this current question: Just WHERE does Sonic Adventure take place? Parts of it definitely suggest Earth, but then again, parts of the game take place on the Floating Island, and we all KNOW that hangs above MOBIUS, not OUR planet! But to the Japanese Sonic players, the Sonic games always HAVE taken place on Earth itself and the logic and continuity problems of having the anthropomorphic characters living here in our own real-life world are no big deal, and are ignored. Players of Sonic Adventure just CANNOT figure out where the planet-side Zones ARE--are they on Mobius, or Earth, or are both planets the same, or what? Some of the Zones in the game clearly take place on the Floating Island--Red Mountain, IceCap, Lost World, the Sand Hill sandboarding thing, Windy Valley, and possibly the whole Mystic Ruins jungle itself. But where IS Station Square, with its adjacent Zones of Twinkle Park, Speed Highway, Casinopolis, and such? Is it New York? Miami? Los Angeles? Or something totally different? And where DID all these Humans come from, all of a sudden? We may never know...
Mobius supposedly, according to the comics, has three moons either INCLUDING the Little Planet, or IN ADDITION TO the Little Planet, I'm not sure which. Anyway, the other two (three?) moons are normal-sized balls of rock orbiting the planet in space like our moon as far as I know. I vaguely remember seeing some picture in the cartoon that had Sally and Tails talking to each other outdoors at night, and I THINK there was a full moon hanging above them--ONE--so that's the version I'm using in my fanfics.
Sonic either lives in the Emerald/Green Hill Zone, or on "South Island" from the "Sonic Chaos" Game Gear game series, depending on whom you believe.
Anyway, that's all I know about Mobius for right now. When I learn more stuff I'll add it, so stay tuned!

curious tourists have wanted to experience the wonders of Planet Mobius since June 9, 1999. Of course, they were all burned to death by a lavafall in the Marble Zone, but hey...
