Tails the Fox
Now Playing: The "Airship Theme" from the original Final Fantasy, on the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System.
Miles "Tails" Prower, the Fox, is one of THE big players in the Sonic universe, secondary only to Sonic himself. As far as I know he has appeared in practically every single Sonic or Sonic-related game, except for the very very first game, (the character did not exist yet at the time) and perhaps some of the fringe ones like "Knuckles Chaotix", although he is not a PLAYABLE character in every single game he's appeared in, necessarily. (In Sonic 3-D Blast he just stands there and helps you get into the Special Stage--if you have 50 rings, bring them to him, and he lets you in.) His first appearance was in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Game Gear; his first PLAYABLE appearance was the Genesis version of Sonic 2 shortly later, and he has been on the scene ever since. He even got two of his OWN games, "Tails' Adventure" and "Tails Sky-Patrol", both for the Game Gear. Tails started off with no special abilities but in his second (Genesis) game, "Sonic the Hedgehog 3", he gained the ability to fly, and swim! (Or, more accurately, he could ALWAYS fly, but you couldn't CONTROL his flying until Sonic 3. VERY useful!)
He is a small, absolutely adorable, little kid fox. (Heck, even my MOM thinks he's adorable, and she normally HATES "cute"!) His age ranges from 8-10 depending on whom you ask and when, but one thing's for sure, he's a little kid. He follows Sonic around because he hero-worships him. This is for two reasons--one, because Sonic is famous, flashy, and fast, and everyone kinda likes him or looks up to him, and two--because Sonic was the first person to be NICE to Miles. You see, Miles Prower was born with TWO tails--a deformity--and was made fun of and called a freak until Sonic took him "under his wing" so to speak and taught him that his two tails could be spun together like propeller-blades in order to help him fly! So from that day forth, Miles had the affectionate nickname "Tails" and had turned his deformity into a great asset. So he follows Sonic everywhere, because he is his best friend. He may not always be able to keep up (as you know if you've ever played the games; Tails seems to keep falling behind and going off of cliffs, drowning, etc.) but he's willing to try. Oh, and he can also roll up into a ball and spin the way Sonic does--he came upon this by accident one day when he fell out of a tree and rolled up for protection, and started spinning--after that, he PRACTICED it on purpose until he got almost as good at it as Sonic.
But he has other aspects to his personality, too. For one thing, Tails is a mechanical genius. He has his own little red biplane, called the Tornado, which even has hidden rocket boosters!--his own submarine, called the "Sea Fox", etc--which he built, all of them, with his own hands! He is very good with engineering-type stuff and can do things like (in his own game, "Tails' Adventure", make conveyor belts go the other way WHILE STANDING ON THEM! He can fix and alter machines while they're running--that's pretty impressive. Basically, think of him as a much younger, cuter, and WAY less annoying version of Wesley Crusher.
He is an eager adventurer but tends to get left behind because the others think he is too small and too young--however, in the cartoon, he DID manage to eventually become one of the Freedom Fighters in his own right. They mainly use him for aerial spying, not combat, but it's a start...
The above was ALL made up by other people besides me--Tails has enough history and background that I don't NEED to make anything else up to supplement it!

curious tourists have stopped by Knothole to meet Tails since June 14, 1999. Of course, they all fainted from his extreme cuteness and he walked off in disgust, but hey...
