The Aquatic Ruin Zone

The Aquatic Ruin is the third level on the game Sonic 2, and one of the prettiest. It is made up of rolling hills, ancient chipped brick walls, deadly falling broken pieces of marble columns, beautiful fruit trees, giant logs, and snapping pirhana-fish. Oh, yes, and INCREDIBLY annoying tank robots with spiky noses popping out of the walls at EXACTLY the wrong moments. (It's actual Badnik Name is "Grounder"--yes, the same one from the cartoon! Only red instead of green.) And did I mention the arrows shooting at you from out random places? I didn't? Silly me...
Although it's called the "Aquatic Ruin" and there IS rather a lot of water, you don't actually have to plunge yourself into it if you're really careful. Just jump from one swinging platform and hit springboards just right, and you can avoid the water entirely. Which is a good thing, 'cos once you sink all the way to the bottom it can be VERY ANNOYING and take quiet a while to get back up to the top--and with bubbles being rather far apart, it's quite easy to drown. Not to mention those annoying fish...
Above ground isn't much better--between Grounder and those ³¢¼¢ing arrows, you can pretty much go nuts. At the very end, Robotnik goes after you with two ancient totem pole statues that shoot arrows out of their mouths. (Don't question it, just accept it...) The music is quiet and sorta atmospheric.
All in all, it's a decent Zone but it's not one of my favourites.

394 curious tourists have visited the Aquatic Ruin since July 29, 1999. Of course, most of them got stabbed through the heart with arrows, but hey...
