The Chemical Plant Zone
The Chemical Plant Zone, the second Zone of Sonic 2, is a bit of a departure from the norm. Not only is it extremely different from the Emerald Hill Zone that preceeds it, but unlike most Sonic games, it throws an "urban/metal fortress" level into the game EARLY, rather than saving it for the end. I LIKE this level, however. It's the first Sonic level I played ever that was EXTREMELY FAST (I started off with Sonic 2 and then played 1 later on) but also challenging--such as those annoying rotating platforms that can throw you straight into the water--or those fireball-spitting bots (gods I hate those things.) This was also where I first found out exactly how easy it is to DROWN Sonic...
Anyway, the Zone itself? First of all, it's very gritty, urban, high-tech and has really cool techno-y/industrial pop music to go with it. (One of my favourite Sonic tunes, actually.) There are all kinds of giant loops and things, glass tubes that suck you in and throw you around at top speed, giant blubbing liquid blue worms, fireball-spitting bots that can cling to walls as well as go along the floor, block stairs that can squish you if you're not careful, and plenty o' toxic water (or as it's officially called, "Mega-Muck"--shown in the above picture) to drown in. Nice place, huh?
In general, it's a very fun level. It'll probably drive you crazy the first time but after you get used to it, it's great.
