The Freedom Fighters

The Freedom Fighters are, (from the cartoon only and NOT the games), a group of rebels who are trying to restore the rightful government of King Acorn and Queen Alicia and take the throne back from the usurper, Robotnik. Well, actually, they DID succeed in defeating HIM; now their problems are being caused by his mechanical duplicate, Robo-Robotnik, who has taken the Eggman's place but is being about ten times as horrible! The capital city of Mobius was once a thriving place full of technology and beauty called "Mobotropolis"; it has now been twisted into a dark, cold, metallic complex renamed "Robotropolis" and the few Mobians that even remain alive after the war are hiding out in pathetic tiny villages in the forest, desperately trying to stockpile weapons and supplies. They are led by Princess Sally Acorn, and consider themselves a "family", in fact often referring to each other by family titles, such as "Aunt Bunnie" et al. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be genuinely warm and friendly or if it also doubles as some kind of code...
They are rather like the Maquis in the French Revolution, or perhaps the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars (with Sally being Leia.) The Freedom Fighter members that I know of include Sally of course, Bunnie, Antoine, Rotor, Nicole, Amy Rose as a minor member, Mina the Mongoose...and Dulcy the Dragon (yes, dragon!). Sonic is technically a member but doesn't really act like he's part of a group most of the time. Tails eventually became a member despite his young age. Their allies include Rosie, Sally's old nursemaid, Julayla, her mentor, and Sonic's Sir Charles Uncle Chuck" Hedgehog--except for LATELY, in the case of Sir Charles. In the comics, there is also the King's Secret Service, a more or less neutral group that helps the Freedom Fighters out on occasion--made up of (originally) Geoffrey St. John, Hershey the Cat, Wombat Stu, Valdez, and Heavy and Bomb. Knuckles was invited to join them but refused, saying he is "not a team player" (another reason to like him in my book; I'm not either. I'd MUCH rather be/work alone.) He does help them every now and then; however, they must accept the fact that Knuckles' help isn't a sure thing--with him, Floating Island ALWAYS comes first.
The Knothole Freedom Fighters are only one chapter of what seems to be a Mobius-wide phenomenon; other groups include the Wolf Pack, the DownUnda Freedom Fighters (Barby, Guru Emu, Walt Wallaby, Duck "Bill" Platypus, and, originally, Wombat Stu), the 20,000 Leauges Freedom Fighters (underwater), and many others. Still, it seems to me that if they ever want to GET anywhere, they're gonna HAVE to team up and centralise, somehow...

323 curious tourists have stopped by to join the Freedom Fighters since June 30, 1999. Of course, half of them died in boot camp while the others were immediately roboticised, but hey...
