The Green Hill Zone
The Green Hill Zone is the place that Sonic the Hedgehog had his very very first adventures ever. In game terms, it is the first level of the game "Sonic the Hedgehog", released in 1991, and the very first level that anybody ever saw the blue blur jump, spin, and run his way through. But NOT spin-dash--that didn't come until later. And boy, lemme tell ya--if you (like me) got used to the later games FIRST, instead of starting with this one, it makes one heck of a hard game, not being able to spin-dash! It's like having one of your feet cut off or something! Well, not LITERALLY...
In descriptive/fanfic terms, it's where Sonic lives--well, either there, or in the EMERALD Hill Zone (original name, huh?) from Sonic 2, OR some place called "South Island", in the comic books. It's a pretty place of, well, green hills, like you might expect, but also has a bit of a tropical flavour, what with the palm trees and such. And there are totem poles here and there--an odd but kinda cool touch. (I'd say it has elements of the Angel Island Zone from Sonic 3 and the Emerald Hill Zone from Sonic 2, mixed together, but that's just me.) It's a pretty easy level to play except for those annoying spikes that show up where you least expect them, and it's got very low technology--pieces of ground that float in the air and move on their own is about it, unless you wanna count those vacuum-suction tunnels. Oh, yes, and there are places where you can spin straight through a wall, if you get up enough momentum. All in all, a pretty good start to the series.

curious tourists have stopped by to visit the Green Hill Zone since July 12, 1999. Of course, most of them were killed by the giant fire-throwing metal hornets or the robotic ladybugs, but hey...
