The Scrap Brain Zone

The Scrap Brain Zone is the second to last Zone of the first Sonic game--and technically, the last REAL level. (The Final Zone is not really a Zone; all you do is fight Robotnik. They do get extra nastiness points for making you do it with ABSOLUTELY NO RINGS, however...)
It is the first of Robotnik's great metal city-fortresses but certainly not the last. This spooky, and extremely DEADLY, urban Zone has things such as conveyor belts that pull you directly into giant spinning buzz-saws (gotta love the classics!), wheel-turning things that grab you and spin you around, and, for an EXTRA mechanical feel, there are even places where you can quite literally get caught in between huge gears--and die. Bolts of lightning split the air from the floor, ceiling, and walls, at the worst possible times, and flames spurt out whenever you least expect them to. Also the floor might decide to hydraulically pull itself straight away from your feet, dumping you into a bottomless pit, so you better be careful!
As difficult as this level is, I do believe that Metropolis Zone from Sonic 2--which is basically an improved version of it--is harder--but only by a LITTLE. Both Zones are THREE Acts of absolute mechanical madness, and both have quite good music. (The Scrap Brain music is by far my favourite from Sonic 1, with the Marble Zone coming in a distant second.)
EXCEPT--one thing might put the Scrap Brain Zone over the top--and that's its ending. Instead of making you fight Robotnik like usual, Eggman shows up and throws you into a water-filled maze for the last act--which is like the Labyrinth Zone on steroids! It is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT! Not only can you get crushed by the ceiling unless you move EXACTLY the right way at the beginning of this part, but the bubbles are MUCH farther apart than they are in the earlier Labyrinth Zone, and you often find yourself FINALLY getting a bubble right when your countdown is flashing "1" and the drowning music is going REALLY FAST! It is very nerve-wracking, to say the least. If you thought the Labyrinth Zone was difficult, you'll HATE this. I myself would much rather have fought Robuttnik...
All in all, not exactly the most hospitable of places--tourists beware!

243 curious tourists have dared to enter the Scrap Brain Zone since July 26, 1999. Of course, they were all ripped to shreds by the buzz-saws or crushed in the giant gears, but hey...
