Well let's just say......IT ROCKS!! As the #1 launch title for the Sega Dreamcast, it features jaw-dropping 128-bit 3D graphics, huge depth in the gameplay, huge worlds & zones, & it all running at a smooth 60 fps per sec.
The story is that Robotnik frees an ancient water demon named Chaos that destroyed an ancient echidna civilization, ancestors of Knux himself. With Chaos, Robotnik plans to give him all 7 Chaos Emeralds, flatten Station Square(a main area for all the characters in the game.), & build his own city, Robotnikland. So the first character you can play with is Sonic, but as you play along, you'll eventually be also able to play with Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and two new characters--E-102 Gamma and Big the Cat. One of the fun things is how pieces of the story of Chaos unfold, through each character, coming together as a whole only after you've finished all six quests. The missions of each of the six are:
Sonic: Defeat Robotnik and Chaos [duh]
Tails: Race Sonic to the Emeralds
Knuckles: Return the Master Emerald Shards to the shrine and restore the Floating Island to the sky.
Amy: Save a family of flickies from the evil robot ZERO
Gamma: Destroy the other E-Series robots
Big: Rescue his pal Froggy
