Absolute Chaotix, Part Nine
And This is a Good Idea...WHY?!
By Mello Bumblebee
Taking a deep breath to steel herself, Sharon put her hand in Charmy's elegantly white-gloved one and plunged towards the glowing bars with her eyes closed.
Instantly, a searing, blinding pain consumed her from the tips of her antennae to the tips of her toes, and she almost fell right out of the air. But she fought against it, and SOMEhow managed to keep from blacking out.
Then they were through, and inside Espio's cage.
"Wake up, Espio!" said Charmy, shaking his friend. The chameleon looked over blearily at him once and muttered, "Are we there yet, Mommy?" before passing all the way out again.
Shaking his head sadly, Charmy unpacked the ring-tether from his backpack and put one hoop around the unconscious Espio's arm, which then shrunk down to the size of an ordinary bracelet; tight enough not to fall off but not SO tight that it would cut off his circulation. Then Charmy handed the other hoop--still at its original size--to Sharon and instructed her to place her hands next to his on it. "We'll be able to pull him out faster if both of us do it at once," he explained. "The less time Espio's touching those bars, the better."
"Speaking of fast," gasped Mighty from the other end of the room--which was now several feet closer than it had been--"could you two PLEASE hurry it up a little?!"
"Right." said Charmy, and with a heave, the two small bees somehow managed to lift the chameleon, who was at LEAST three or four times their size, into the air, using the magic of the invisible energy tether between the two rings. They both fluttered their wings furiously, trying to get up as much speed as they could, and with a POP, Espio was yanked violently through the bars--and free. How good a shape he was in was doubtful, but they'd have to wait 'til later to patch him up...
"GO!" yelled Charmy, and he and Sharon flew under the wall, Mighty tucking himself into his ball position to rull under it just in time, as it SLAMMED down behind them.
And they were in a huge, empty room.
But not SO empty.
"Oh, my, God," said Charmy, looking around the room--this one was lit by torches on the walls, illuminating complex ancient hieroglyphics everywhere, "I can't believe it. I thought it was just a legend!"
"Well, it ain't," said Mighty, standing up stiffly and rubbing his back where the wall had scratched his armour. "It's real, all right. And it's coming this way."
Sharon gasped as she realised what they were looking at. It was a...
