A GUIDE TO MOBIAN SCIENCE By Shax the Scientist Raptor SHORT NOTE FROM SHAX: This little document type thingy was worked out according to my own Sonic universe. Yes, the world of Sonic, like any other fictional character, is split up into infinate different parallel universes. Every universe has an 'owner', like a god, who dictates what happens in it. A universe can have more than one owner. Universe owners can be authors of fanfiction, who each manage a different universe, and they can be the inspiration for other universes, like Archie or SEGA. Wait... I'm getting into this science thing a little early, eh? Oh well, I love pondering about the scientific aspect of things. Anyway, this may make _slight_ referances to things that can only be found in my universe, but shouldn't be too hard to work out... Also, this isn't supposed to be a smooth flowing story - theories are set in paragraphs, and may have nothing to do with the theory before or after. TECHNOLOGY AND MOBIANS: You might ask - why do Mobians shoot phaser weapons, build robots, work on super computers, but yet, they live in villages in the forest? Well, Mobius is in fact much more, possibly by a few centuries, advanced than Earth. However, they have not ruined their planet with the technology they harness. Because they are born from the forest (evolved from woodland creatures) they do not see the use of too much technology. Their true calling lies with nature, so they keep their technology restricted. Dr. Robotnik, being human, does not feel this restriction. Therefore, he has built Robotropolis to be overflowing with technology, robots and the like. Knothole uses some advanced technology, but for purposes of self defence. THE EMERALDS: Mobius has a unique natural mineral, lets call it 'emerald', which has power locked beneath its surface. You see, all creatures on the planet are basically good, yet evil is an actual physical force. Every organism naturally contains a regulated amount of evil, which balances with the good, and therefore enables them to have personalities. Sometimes evil can outweigh good, and vice versa. This gives us villains and good guys. Because of the unique power lining emerald, the mineral has the ability to drain evil from the atmosphere, and lock it in compressed form inside. (see my story 'The Secret Past', to see how this theory played a part in Robotnik's own creation) Emerald also has other powers, depending on its sub-group. I have taken the liberty of naming the four classes of emerald, for the sake of this document. Greek letters, anyone? (note that one class of emerald does not appear in the games, or anywhere else. This type of emerald will play a part in my fanfiction, in the near future :) Alpha type emerald has the power to warp through time. Beta emerald reduces the density of its surroundings, enabling it to float. Gamma emerald removes the force that blocks light, enabling light to pass through it, becoming invisible to light-based vision. Delta emerald increases kinetic, and other types of energy, in its surroundings, increasing power. All these emeralds have the ability to share their ability with any matter in contact with it, e.g. If something touches alpha it will warp, if something touches beta it will float, if something touches gamma it will become invisible, if something touches delta it will become extremely powerful.) Emerald is very rare, and takes millions of years to form. It will only form underground, in almost perfect conditions. It emits no radiation, except minute radio waves. THE MOBIAN MONARCHY, AND THE GEOGRAPHY OF MOBIUS: Mobius is a monarchy. Each continent has a royal family (Except the continent in which the Sonic stories take place. Robotnik has overthrown it.)(There is reference in my stories to another monarchy on another continent. See 'Tale of a Rocket Knight') It is not certain how many continents are on Mobius, or what their names are (Possibly thought unimportant by Mobius' creators, DiC and Archie). But there is definately an ocean dividing continents, and could be any number of continents therin. The continents consist mainly of forest. The population of Mobius is low, compared to Earth, and, as stated above, Mobians are environmentalists, and live with the forest. THE ROBOTIZER: Ooh, this is a hard one, but I've given it a long hard think. The Robotizer (or 'roboticizer', as it is called elsewhere) is one of the strangest contraptions on Mobius. It supposedly uses a beam of light to turn flesh into metal. Now, I have a theory on how this is possible - nanomachines. Tiny little robots. Now, if tousands of millions of these machines could be released inside this beam, they could use carried supplies, or even dismantle themselves, to build metal over the skin, and install software into the brain. Maybe the beam is simply a vehicle, so these machines can move around in the air, and build. Surely, if Mobius is as advanced as it appears, surely they would have nanotechnology. Anyway, this is the only way I can see the robotizer to be possible, so that's my theory. :) GEOGRAPHY OF THE FLOATING ISLAND: The Floating Island contains a large class beta emerald (master emerald), and seven rather large class delta emeralds (super emeralds), in its underground catacombs. The master emerald allows the island to fly. Now, on the surface of this relatively small land mass, there are several visably different climates. Namely, there are forests, an underground lake, cities, an ice cap, a desert, swamps, and even a molten volcano. How could this occur naturally? Well, my theory is that it didn't. The inhabitants (now gone) of the island must have created them artificially. And the reason is this - It is a small island, way up in the sky, with no contacts with the larger land masses. If you were stuck on an island with nothing but forests for the rest of your life, wouldn't _you_ wish for some variety? And the presence of ancient cities and structures in most of these environments confirms that there were some who would rather live in an exotic environment, rather than the natural one. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANIMALS AND MOBIANS: "If Sonic eats a chilli dog, how does he know he isn't chomping down on his uncle?" This is a very common question, currently floating around. Another one was brought up recently by a friend of mine - "If a Mobian wears a fur coat, did he go and off someone, and wear their skin?" And if you've ever played a Sonic game, you'll notice that, when you jump on a badnik, an animal comes out and jumps around. This brings up the fact that Mobius must indefinately contain both sentiant and non-sentiant creatures. But, if this is so, why? And how do you tell the difference? I believe that, way back in the days of the primordial soup, a whole big group of animals came out, exactly like on Earth. Now, according to Darwin's theory of evolution, occasionally there will be an accidental mutation in an animal's birth. Mostly, these mutations will not be able to survive, and will die. But, occasionally, there will be a spanner in the works, but it will actually create a creature with a benifit over its bretherin. Say, a hedgehog born with an abnormally large brain. This creature will remain alive, mate, and create a new creature like itself, spreading the abnormality like a hereditary disease. Then, the abnormality will become not-so-abnormal, and the original creatures will die out. Now, it's a long shot, but this could happen to several creatures, over the thousands of years becoming smarter and smarter until they form a civilisation. Then, some creatures would be sentiant, and the remaining creatures would be non-sentiant, and provide food and clothing for their intelligent cousins. If some creatures became smart, and others stayed the same, this would explain why you never see a non-sentiant hedgehog or echidna etc. And you don't see a sentiant canary. It would seem that this evolutionary process only happened to mammals and reptiles, but with the presence of characters like Charmy Bee, it appears that the possibilities are endless. WHY DON'T ARMIES COME FROM OTHER CONTINENTS, AND KICK ROBOTNIK'S FAT BUTT? This is something I have wondered for a long time, so I decided to slip it in here. There's an entire planet of kingdoms and monarchies on Mobius, with millions of soldiers and billions of weapons. So why is it that Robotnik continues to rule his little city, when clearly, he doesn't stand a ghost of a chance against the entire planet and its armies? Why doesn't Mobius simply wage war on Robotnik's backside? Well, here's my theory - The continents on Mobius are not inter-connected, like they are on Earth. Each monarchy simply worries about what happens on its own continent. In other words, if anything bad happens in your kingdom, suck crap, we won't help you. :) Either that, or kingdoms are so distant that nobody knows what's going on in the next kingdom. So, Mobitropolis' kingdom being wiped out, they're on their own. THE LITTLE PLANET: Yeah, that place in Sonic CD. You might ask, "What's up with that?" Well, here's my theory... The Little Planet isn't really a little planet. Mobius has two natural sattelites. The Little Planet is simply a moon, with some type Alpha emerald on it. It has an atmosphere, and plantlife. The emeralds (called 'time stones' in the game), due to fluxes of power, warp through time at random periods. Because of the effect mentioned earlier, the Little Planet warps as well, being in contact with the emerald, sharing its power. Now, another thing that bothers me is that Little Planet is in fact -inside- Mobius' atmosphere. See the little film clip at the beginning of Sonic CD? Sonic doesn't have to go through space, in order to get there, he just runs up Robotnik's big chain. Now, the laws of gravity have no choice but to mark a great big 'X' over that scene. There is, however, one way to explain it. Class Beta emerald. Remember? It makes stuff float. Perhaps there could be some small traces of Beta emerald on Little Planet. Who knows? That's my theory - I'm open to any other suggestions. GOLLY I HATE WORKING OUT TIME ZONES Here's a big one for you - the Mobius-to-Earth time difference. According to the comics and stuff, at the time of the Sonic era, Mobius is in the year three thousand and something. Does this mean we're all dead by this time? My theory is... possibly not. Sonic could be running around on Mobius, as you are reading this. Or, he could have even died long before you were born. Confusing you yet? Not vey complicated at all, we just have to consider a few variables: 1. The age of Mobius - The planet Mobius could have been created a billion years before/after Earth. According to the theory that new matter is constantly being created, there is no reason why time on Mobius should be the same as time on Earth. 2. The calendar - Calendars are based on events. In our case, it is the birth of Jesus Christ. Now, unless Jesus (or another religeous icon) was also on Mobius for a period of time, we can assume that the Mobian calendar is based on a different event. Even if Christ was on Mobius, it may have not been at the same time. Taking these points into consideration, you can see how it is, in fact, incredibly far-fetched to think that Mobius and Earth _are_ parrallel in time. If you have any questions nagging you about Mobius, feel free to drop me an E-mail at shax@angelfire.com, and I will consider it, and produce a theory for you to ponder. I hope these theories have enlightened you, and put some of your wonderings to rest. Shax the Raptor's Virtual Den http://www.angelfire.com/sd/shaxraptor
