Lair of the Unidragon, Page Forty-Four
Suspiciously, you peer into the darkness, searching for the source of the voice, but even with infravision, you find nothing. Either there's somebody in there who can mask their body heat (or is cold-blooded), or this is the "voice from nowhere" Charlie warned you about. Best not to take any chances. With eyes wide open and mouth firmly shut, you continue down the tunnel.
"HEY!"
booms the voice. "YOU CAN'T GO IN THERE!"
You notice that it still seems to be coming from slightly further down the tunnel, when in fact it should be BEHIND you by now. This confirms your suspicions. You press on.
The tunnel is so dark, and closed-in, you have to sort of grope your way along. Finally, you see a small, golden light glowing a few hundred yards (or so; it's hard to tell in pitch blackness) in front of you.
The Goldensword? No, it's too small. You come closer.
On a low stone pedestal is a golden bell. You pick it up with relief. Protection from traps is something you definitely need in this place. Now, how to test it?
"PUT THAT DOWN THIS INSTANT, YOUNG MAN!"
bellows that annoying voice again. Slowly, a malicious grin covers your face as you pick up a small stone and strike the bell. It makes no sound at all, but the results are immediately obvious.
"YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT,"
wails The Voice, with a whining, pleading tone this time. "THAT'S
NOT Fair....." and it dies away.
It must have counted as a trap, all right. "Heh, heh, heh" you chuckle, thinking how useful this bell would be in your normal job. Might as well finish exploring this place, you think. Discovering that the tunnel ends a few inches after the bell's pedestal, you go back out to the entrance of the cave and take the only tunnel remaining--the left one.
