Angband is a dungeon based computer role playing game.
It is loosely based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. It is similar
in concept to Dungeons and Dragons, and to some degree to Blizzard Software's
Diablo. The easiest way to imagine the game is to say it's Diablo,
with text based graphics and much, much more detail. The varieties
of armour and weapons available are incredible. Axes, daggers, longswords,
broadswords, tridents, pikes, plate, leather scale mail, iron helms, steel
helms, mithral chain, and adamant plate are just a few of the armours and
weapons available. There are also both Ego weapons and Artifact weapons.
Ego items are those that give special powers, such as elemental brands
and/or regeneration. There are many other powers that could be had
from Ego weapons. Artifacts are items that the game will create only
one of, and when that one is gone, it's gone for good. They can be
some of the most powerful weapons and protective armours. Or they
could be nearly useless, depending on the item and how powerful you are
at the time. The Artifacts all come from Tolkien's world somewhere.
A good example is the longsword 'Ringil,' this is one of the most powerful
weapons in the game and was once the property of Fingolfin, a High King
of the Noldor and the only elf or man to ever wound Morgoth. Morgoth
is the devil of Tolkien's works and his death is the main objective of
Angband. Oh yeah, BTW, Angband is available precompiled for free
for every major platform, and most minor ones as well.
