Past
Meowth was abandoned by his parents very early on in life. After drifting around for a while, struggling to survive, he came across a gang of Meowths, headed by a Persian. After joining the gang, he met a female Meowth named Meowzy (Madonna in Japan =P), whom he fell in love with. Meowzy was owned by a rich woman, and was very, very spoiled. When Meowth tried to win Meowzy from the woman, she scoffed and told him that she didn't want to talk to him because he was a poor street Meowth, who couldn't do anything for her because he "wasn't even human". Taking this the wrong way, Meowth was determined to impress Meowzy, so he decided to try to become as humanlike as possible. He taught himself to speak human language and to walk on his hind legs. After all of his hard work, Meowzy again rejected him, saying that he was even worse now, because he was a freak. So, he left the gang, and he somehow met Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket. Meowth was Giovanni's personal pet for a bit, until Giovanni had Meowth work join the Team of Jessie and James. Soon afterwards, Giovanni replaced Meowth by making a Persian his pet. Poor Meowth!
Personality
Meowth the best Pokemon of all, in my opinion! He's sooooo cute, not to mention that he's definitely one of the smartest Pokemon to ever exist. He claims to be the leader of the trio (but *I* still think it's Jessie! ^_^). Meowth is one of two Pokemon that has ever been shown to be able to speak (the other being Gastly in "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak"). Meowth is pretty short tempered, although not as much as Jessie. Whenever James or Jessie tick him off, he usually scratches them across the face to shut them up (but it usually just succeeds is ticking *them* off...). I don't really think that Meowth is all evil, either. In fact, he said himself that the only reason he joined Team Rocket was to become rich and powerful to win Meowzy's love...Meowth is often embarrassed by Jessie and James' quirkiness, and he often tends to be the most serious member of the trio. Sometimes, he'll cut Jessie and James off during the middle of their speech (God forbid!). Meowth also doesn't seem to be as stuck on beauty as the other two, and doesn't seem to be quite as selfish.
